{"id":214202,"date":"2021-03-01T19:10:22","date_gmt":"2021-03-02T00:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=214202"},"modified":"2021-03-01T19:10:22","modified_gmt":"2021-03-02T00:10:22","slug":"university-honors-women-in-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2021\/03\/01\/university-honors-women-in-history\/","title":{"rendered":"University Honors Women in History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Montclair State began its virtual commemoration of Women\u2019s History Month on Monday, March 1, by recognizing and honoring women\u2019s suffrage and the role models who have left indelible marks on society. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen from all walks of life were instrumental in building our nation and have a very rich and inspiring history in our country,\u201d said President Susan A. Cole, reading a proclamation to kick off the observance. The contributions include social movements for women&#8217;s suffrage and civil rights, and leadership roles in social political, cultural, economic and intellectual development. <\/p>\n<p>At Montclair State, \u201cwomen from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds have served our campus community with extraordinary leadership, vision and intellectual achievements,\u201d Cole said. \u201cWomen graduates have used their education to make important contributions to society.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Cole has served as the University\u2019s first woman president for the past 23 years and in brief remarks noted how the Montclair State community has recognized the importance of a society that provides \u201cequality of opportunity as its core and definition.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s theme celebrates women&#8217;s suffrage \u2013 \u201cValiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silent.\u201d Speakers noted the achievements of Kamala Harris, the nation&#8217;s first woman vice president, as well as the first Black American and first person of South Asian descent, who represents \u201cwhat can come true to women who desire to follow their dreams,\u201d said Patricia Ogbonna, a senior majoring in Psychology and member of the Gamma Rho Sorority, co-sponsor with the Women\u2019s Center of the opening event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to honor, celebrate and learn more about the women who came before us, from Shirley Chisholm to Amanda Gorman,\u201d said Suzanne Pasquino \u201916, program associate in the Office of Social Justice and Diversity. \u201cWe also want to do our part in fighting against women&#8217;s issues to help make way for our future leaders and innovators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the month, the Office for Social Justice and Diversity will post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/osjdmontclair\/?hl=en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a> women suffragettes and politicians who have made or are making history. <\/p>\n<p>The Volunteer Center will also be <a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.campuslabs.com\/engage\/event\/6942653\">accepting donations<\/a> of non-perishables and toiletries for Eva&#8217;s Village in Paterson.
