{"id":215262,"date":"2021-07-14T11:49:03","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T15:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=215262"},"modified":"2021-07-14T13:55:42","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T17:55:42","slug":"university-awarded-1-4m-to-address-impacts-of-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2021\/07\/14\/university-awarded-1-4m-to-address-impacts-of-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"University Awarded $1.4M to Address Impacts of COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Montclair State University will receive more than $1.4 million from the State of New Jersey to support programs that help address the impacts of COVID-19 on postsecondary students.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/governor\/news\/news\/562021\/approved\/20210712a.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Governor Phil Murphy and Secretary of Higher Education Brian Bridges announced the grants <\/a>July 12, with Montclair State among 35 public and public-mission private institutions receiving $30 million in state aid to implement vetted <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/highereducation\/workinggroups.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">best practices<\/a> that increase college completion, address barriers to student success, and develop sustainable systemic reforms.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2021\/07\/13\/montclair-state-awarded-grant-to-help-fight-hunger\/\">$100,000 grant to fight food insecurity among students<\/a>, Montclair State was awarded:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$799,725 to support a dual-enrollment program for high school students in collaboration with the Newark Board of Education, and<\/li>\n<li>$510,775 for integrated initiatives to support increased participation and success by minority and economically disadvantaged students in STEM fields.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThese programs are designed to increase student engagement and support academic progress at a time when the challenges facing underrepresented and low-income students have been compounded by the global pandemic,\u201d explains President Susan A. Cole. \u201cMontclair State is steadfast in our resolve to meet those challenges in service to our students and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Opportunity Meets Innovation Challenge grant award provides critical funding that allows Montclair State University to continue to solidify its status as an R2 Institution and renews the University\u2019s commitment to its mission of equity and access,\u201d says David Hood, associate provost for Undergraduate Education and dean of University College. \u201cSpecifically, the OMIC will provide funding for the University to launch the Future College Graduate Institute in partnership with Newark Board of Education.
