{"id":217128,"date":"2022-01-18T10:31:13","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T15:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=217128"},"modified":"2023-09-29T09:23:31","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T13:23:31","slug":"mlk-inspires-a-day-of-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/01\/18\/mlk-inspires-a-day-of-service\/","title":{"rendered":"MLK Inspires a Day of Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kisha Joyner recalls the day as a 7-year-old girl when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached on poverty at her lifelong church, Union Baptist in the City of Orange. \u201cEven though I didn&#8217;t fully understand, I knew it was an exciting time,\u201d she says. \u201cI&#8217;d never seen that many people in the church before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. King\u2019s visit on March 27, 1968, was among several in New Jersey \u2013 just eight days before his assasination \u2013 in Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Orange to bring awareness to the Poor People&#8217;s Campaign. \u201cFor him to be assassinated so shortly after his visit, it was just so fresh as a child,\u201d Joyner says.<\/p>\n<p>The memories remain strong 54 years later as Joyner, now a church trustee, shared the story with Montclair State University President Jonathan Koppell during a recent visit. With the Union Baptist Church providing a fitting backdrop to commemorate Dr. King\u2019s legacy, the University <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zZRHUxf9Nog\" target=\"_blank\">filmed a video<\/a> promoting the power of public service.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/01\/20220105_MLK_Day_2.00_00_16_03.Still003.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/01\/20220105_MLK_Day_2.00_00_16_03.Still003.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Kisha Joyner speaks with President Koppell\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kisha Joyner recalls the day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at Union Baptist Church in Orange, New Jersey, during a visit with University President Jonathan Koppell. (Photo by Christo Apostolou)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing that gives more meaning to our lives than doing something to improve the lives of others,\u201d Koppell says in the message to the Montclair community.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, January 17, Montclair students did just that, coming together on a wintry day for the MLK Day of Service and Remembrance, with volunteers packaging hygiene and medical supplies, stocking shelves, sorting clothes, feeding the hungry and participating via video with senior citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about bringing communities together and making the world we live in a better place for everyone,\u201d says Sara Duricko, a senior Psychology major with minors in both Criminal Justice and Environmental Justice.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/01\/011722_4705_MLK-Day-of-Service-scaled.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/01\/011722_4705_MLK-Day-of-Service-scaled.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Sara Duricko\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sara Duricko registers volunteers at the University\u2019s MLK Day of Service and Remembrance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Duricko\u2019s incentive to volunteer stems from her involvement with the University&#8217;s Bonner Leader Program. \u201cIt encapsulates all of my beliefs and gives me an outlet to practice them in my everyday life,\u201d she says. \u201cI love serving as many communities as I can through civic engagement and advocacy, and acting on necessary changes every chance I get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sampling of the volunteer activities included students on campus making blankets for the homeless and assembling hygiene kits for children. At Wynona\u2019s House, an Essex County child advocacy center In Newark, volunteers unpacked donated toys and filled shelves with everyday essentials.
