{"id":217910,"date":"2022-04-26T10:01:55","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T14:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=217910"},"modified":"2022-05-02T10:16:04","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T14:16:04","slug":"professor-named-to-2022-class-of-andrew-carnegie-fellows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/04\/26\/professor-named-to-2022-class-of-andrew-carnegie-fellows\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Named to 2022 Class of Andrew Carnegie Fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public Health Associate Professor Tamara Leech has been named to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegie.org\/awards\/andrew-carnegie-fellows\/2022\/\">2022 class of Andrew Carnegie Fellows<\/a> and will be awarded a $200,000 stipend to devote up to two years for research and writing in the humanities and social sciences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/cehs\/2020\/09\/02\/dr-tamara-leechs-research-featured-by-the-ace-evaluation-network\/\">Leech&#8217;s work<\/a> centers on the well-being of youths who live in marginalized and underserved urban environments. In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/1525822X19838285?casa_token=yB1rOV26Wq4AAAAA%3AUtX-7-NRqGWOPBdaqTiJ9jy_WwKB_C1z5z_dUvhwHLQtvhqgqIXSowI1GDjvOsg-8DY_-O5e_97YAQ\">Leech co-authored a study<\/a> about common recruitment and retention obstacles that scholars interested in racial disparities research face: potential mistrust from the black community; a stigmatized research topic; and high participation burden.<br \/>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/04\/Tamara-Leech.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/04\/Tamara-Leech.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Dr. Tamara Leech\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Public Health Associate Professor Tamara Leech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\"><br \/>\nThe goal of her fellowship project, \u201cCommunity Conversations and Reimagining Public Safety,\u201d is to help cities center impacted communities in their public safety redesign process.\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, I aim to conduct community conversations in three geographically distinct jurisdictions and then produce research tool kits openly available to scholars, municipalities and community members attempting to reimagine first response in their cities,\u201d Leech says. \u201cEnsuring that communities have a meaningful voice in the reform process is critical to developing effective and equitable public safety systems.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The fellowship is backed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegie.org\/\">Carnegie Corporation of New York<\/a>, a philanthropic foundation that supports scholarship and research into the social sciences and humanities, and addresses important societal issues. Leech is one of 28 distinguished scholars and writers selected for this year\u2019s class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted and honored to receive an award that allows me to continue to engage with diverse groups of community members in different regions throughout the U.S.,\u201d Leech says. \u201cGiven the current cultural climate and readiness for reform, I\u2019m ecstatic that this support will help me continue this work and bring it to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can think of no scholar more deserving of this type of recognition than Professor Leech,\u201d says College of Education and Human Services Acting Dean Katrina Bulkley. \u201cHer research in an area in urgent need of reform will continue to serve as a catalyst for positive change.
