Montclair forged new partnerships, opened an Office of Student Belonging, and in the fall, celebrated the investiture of its ninth president, Jonathan Koppell, as well as his vision of Montclair as a solutions engine. Here are some of the highlights from this past year.<\/p>\n<h2>Imagining a New Era<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/2022-09-16_investiture-hero.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/2022-09-16_investiture-hero.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"President Koppell smiles at attendees on campus\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Montclair celebrated a rare and regalia-clad occasion: the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/09\/16\/a-day-to-fuel-the-imagination\/?\" target=\"_blank\">investiture of Jonathan GS Koppell<\/a>, the University\u2019s ninth president in the institution\u2019s 114-year history. Koppell shared his vision for a university making a difference in the world. He was joined this year by a new Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Junius Gonzales, the second-highest ranking officer at Montclair.<\/p>\n<p>To promote further student success and respond to future workforce needs, Koppell announced the reconfiguration or creation of new colleges and schools, including the College for Education and Engaged Learning, the College for Community Health and the School of Computing, effective summer 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>New Partners<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/100522_7327_Rockys-Birthday.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/100522_7327_Rockys-Birthday.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Rocky with Bloomfield College Bear mascot\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The University ushered in a new era of partnerships with <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/26\/montclair-state-university-and-bloomfield-college-announce-merger-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomfield College<\/a>. The historic merger of Montclair and Bloomfield College advances plans to create \u201cBloomfield College of Montclair State University,\u201d a model for other institutions of higher learning. Montclair also is expanding its partnerships with Union College and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/05\/10\/montclair-and-hudson-sign-joint-academic-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hudson County Community College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Making a Difference in the World<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/120522_8981_Hinchcliff-Stadium-Press-Conference-scaled.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/120522_8981_Hinchcliff-Stadium-Press-Conference-scaled.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Hinchliffe Stadium announcement\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">From Left: BAW Development, LLC CEO Baye Adolfo-Wilson, Paterson Public Schools Superintendent Eileen F. Shafer, Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, donor Chuck Muth &#8217;77 and Montclair President Jonathan Koppell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/06\/20\/us-department-of-education-features-red-hawks-rising\/?\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Department of Education featured the Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy<\/a>, recognizing Montclair\u2019s collaboration with the Newark Board of Education and American Federation of Teachers, on its #InnovatED online series. Montclair also partnered with the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.volckeralliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Volcker Alliance<\/a> to join the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/26\/we-are-nextgen\/?\" target=\"_blank\">Next Generation Service Corps<\/a> (aka NextGen Service), a national network of 11 higher education institutions committed to preparing undergraduate students for public service. In December, the University announced a <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/12\/05\/university-announces-5-million-gift-to-partner-in-paterson-revitalization-efforts\/?utm_source=carousel&amp;utm_campaign=homepage_features&amp;utm_medium=montclair.edu&amp;utm_content=1\" target=\"_blank\">$5 million gift<\/a> from alumnus Chuck Muth \u201977 and wife, Laura, to help Montclair make a difference in Paterson. The first educational project will be the creation and operation of a museum and learning center at the historic Hinchliffe Stadium, one of the last remaining Negro League stadiums in the country.<\/p>\n<h2>Forward Thinking Research<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/121521_8112_SCM-Hawk-Communications.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/121521_8112_SCM-Hawk-Communications.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"student wearing mask in classroom\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Montclair researchers are studying the effects of the pandemic on college students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A dynamic research institution, Montclair continued making news with some groundbreaking research. Among some of the highlights: One of the first and largest studies to document the psychological, academic and economic <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/02\/17\/new-study-shows-covid-19-impact-on-college-students\/?\" target=\"_blank\">impact of COVID-19 on college students<\/a>; studies revealing the increased use of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/31\/study-finds-hate-speech-on-twitter-increased-following-elon-musk-takeover\/\" target=\"_blank\">hate speech<\/a> terms on Twitter, including the use of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/11\/29\/study-use-of-groomer-hate-speech-increased-on-twitter-after-colorado-springs-nightclub-shooting\/?\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018groomer&#8217;<\/a> after the Colorado Springs nightclub shooting.<\/p>\n<p>A few of the many other research highlights included studies that impact people\u2019s lives, including research on <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/fall-winter-2022\/professors-neutron-research-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\">neutrons<\/a> and dark matter, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/05\/26\/jellyfish-safety-and-more-beach-season-tips\/?\" target=\"_blank\">jellyfish<\/a> invasions, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/05\/09\/harmful-algal-blooms-may-impact-your-water\/?\" target=\"_blank\">safe drinking water<\/a> and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/04\/25\/doctoral-student-joins-ocean-expedition-to-investigate-climate-change\/?\" target=\"_blank\">climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>University faculty also earned more grants to continue research, including <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/fall-winter-2022\/bringing-computer-science-to-k-12-classrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\">$1.2 million from the National Science Foundation and the New Jersey Department of Education<\/a> for Computer Science and Education faculty to create support programs and opportunities for teachers to increase computer science offerings in elementary education.<\/p>\n<h2>Montclair\u2019s Stars Shine Bright<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/10\/102922_3144_Homecoming.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/10\/102922_3144_Homecoming.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Group of people standing on football field to honor Sam Mills\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Pro Football Hall of Famer Sam Mills, Montclair\u2019s greatest football player, was a 5\u20199\u201d linebacker thought to be too small to go pro. His outsize work ethic proved the naysayers wrong. Mills was posthumously <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/02\/11\/sam-mills-80-elected-to-pro-football-hall-of-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\">enshrined to the Pro Football Hall of Fame<\/a> in August and was <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/fall-winter-2022\/keep-pounding\/\" target=\"_blank\">honored on Sprague Field at Homecoming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/031922_7362_CALI-Music-at-MET-Museum-scaled.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/031922_7362_CALI-Music-at-MET-Museum-scaled.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Nuzzetti, Ethan Smith, Nick Scafuto, and Julian Dippolito on stage\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>In March, Montclair\u2019s musicians performed on the stage of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/03\/30\/montclair-at-the-met\/?\" target=\"_blank\">The Metropolitan Museum of Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/TheCollegeTour_Hero.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/03\/TheCollegeTour_Hero.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"collage of participants and scenes from Montclair&apos;s episode of The College Tour\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Montclair made its Amazon Prime streaming debut on Season 4 of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/03\/14\/the-college-tour-coming-soon-on-an-app-near-you\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The College Tour<\/em><\/a> last spring.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/05\/NRC_8392-scaled.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/05\/NRC_8392-scaled.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Nursing graduates, faculty and President Koppell with the hosts of the Today Show\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Nathan Congleton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In May, graduates of Montclair\u2019s Nursing program experienced a once-in-a-lifetime moment: a special, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/05\/11\/nursing-grads-rock-the-today-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">live pinning ceremony on NBC\u2019s <em>The Today Show<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Brilliance Beyond Borders<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/041322_7365_Rally-for-Ukraine.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/041322_7365_Rally-for-Ukraine.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"man wearing Ukrainian flag around his shoulders stands near people seated in amphitheater\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Montclair fosters a worldview among students that stretches far beyond campus. In April, students, faculty and staff showed <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/04\/20\/campus-shows-support-for-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">support for citizens in Ukraine<\/a>, and the University became a place of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/fall-winter-2022\/snapshots\/\" target=\"_blank\">refuge for scholars<\/a>. University professors and students explored new possibilities, including the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/08\/10\/wind-symphony-performs-in-prague\/?\" target=\"_blank\">Wind Symphony performing in Prague<\/a> and students across disciplines creating and performing multimedia projects in <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/09\/07\/experiencing-scotland\/?\" target=\"_blank\">Dundee, Scotland<\/a>. Meanwhile, journalism students covered the topics of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/fall-winter-2022\/hard-news-in-the-big-easy\/\" target=\"_blank\">race and social justice in New Orleans<\/a> and communication and media students experienced the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/08\/08\/the-opportunity-of-a-lifetime\/?\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018The Opportunity of a Lifetime\u2019<\/a> covering Sam Mills\u2019 induction into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Among other subjects that sent students traveling were the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/06\/29\/reaching-new-heights\/?\" target=\"_blank\">geology of Wyoming and Montana<\/a>, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/09\/22\/discoveries-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\">biology and genetics in Japan<\/a> and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/08\/31\/educators-connect-ideas-globally-on-inclusive-schooling\/?\" target=\"_blank\">special education programs in Helsinki<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Life\u2019s Big Moments<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/05\/052022_3875_Students.Cheering.Commencement-1.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/05\/052022_3875_Students.Cheering.Commencement-1.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of graduates cheering in MetLife Stadium\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Montclair celebrated <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/05\/21\/class-of-2022-ready-to-make-the-world-a-better-place\/\" target=\"_blank\">Commencement<\/a> with an eye toward making the world a better place. \u201cWe are counting on you to continue with the energy, resourcefulness and commitment you have demonstrated today,\u201d Koppell told graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who graduated in this year was a woman who 22 years ago was <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/06\/06\/born-a-red-hawk-always-a-red-hawk\/?\" target=\"_blank\">almost born in Bohn Hall<\/a>. Diana Sisk-Gritz\u2019s mother went into a surprise labor in the residence hall \u2013 not even knowing she was pregnant. During Convocation, Sisk-Gritz and her boyfriend, Tyler Frantino, also Class of 2022, became engaged.<\/p>\n<p>Theirs wasn\u2019t the only graduation <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/06\/03\/a-diploma-and-a-surprise-proposal\/?\" target=\"_blank\">engagement<\/a>. Public Health graduate Kathy Fevrius said \u201cYes,\u201d in front of a cheering crowd of graduates, during a surprise proposal at the College of Education and Human Services Convocation. The proposal made headlines and went viral on social media.<\/p>\n<h2>Milestones and Memories<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/090122_1425_Red-Hawk-Day.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/090122_1425_Red-Hawk-Day.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Rocky the Red Hawk dancing with students on campus\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The University welcomed the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/09\/01\/university-welcomes-largest-enrollment-in-its-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">largest incoming class and enrollment in the school&#8217;s history<\/a>, pushing its total enrollment to 21,671. An Hispanic-Serving Institution, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/07\/19\/prepping-for-success\/\" target=\"_blank\">Montclair has become a destination school for diverse and first-generation students<\/a>, with 41% of the incoming class identifying as Hispanic or Latino. It also became a <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/11\/university-again-named-fulbright-hsi-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fulbright HSI Leader for the second year in a row<\/a> for helping students and faculty benefit from a variety of on-campus Fulbright initiatives.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/101022_5983_Indigenous-Peoples-Day.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/12\/101022_5983_Indigenous-Peoples-Day.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"dancer in traditional indigenous clothing\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>In creating a campus of belonging for all students, the University celebrated its history, its present and its future. October and November were festive as the University celebrated <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/11\/university-celebrates-indigenous-peoples-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous People\u2019s Day<\/a> by unveiling a new Native American and Indigenous Studies minor and its formal Land Acknowledgement, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/13\/a-fun-fiesta\/?\" target=\"_blank\">Hispanic\/Latinx Heritage Month<\/a>, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/11\/10\/first-to-fly\/?\" target=\"_blank\">National First-Generation College Celebration Day<\/a>, the contributions and sacrifices of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/11\/08\/united-through-service\/?\" target=\"_blank\">military-affiliated students<\/a> and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/11\/16\/celebrating-transgender-awareness-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">Transgender Awareness Week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/10\/102922_2610_Homecoming-LAROSA.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/10\/102922_2610_Homecoming-LAROSA.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Members of greek life dancing on campus wearing matching tee shirts\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dancing at Homecoming. Photo by John LaRosa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were also the traditional celebrations and rites of passage, from summer Early College Programs and moving back into residence halls to <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/31\/returning-to-the-nest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Homecoming<\/a> and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/06\/celebrating-rocky\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rocky\u2019s birthday<\/a>. Montclair made sure that students felt the love by sponsoring more than 50 events during its first <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/10\/13\/appreciating-students\/?\" target=\"_blank\">Student Appreciation Week<\/a>.
