{"id":220382,"date":"2023-03-22T02:00:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T06:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=220382"},"modified":"2023-03-23T13:10:36","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T17:10:36","slug":"professor-selected-for-groundwater-research-fellowship-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/03\/22\/professor-selected-for-groundwater-research-fellowship-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Selected for Groundwater Research Fellowship in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earth and Environmental Studies Professor Duke Ophori has been selected for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/programs\/carnegie-african-diaspora-fellowship-program\/\">Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP)<\/a> and will travel to Nigeria in June to work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/fupre.edu.ng\/\">Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE)<\/a> for research collaboration and graduate student training in the school\u2019s Department of Geology.<\/p>\n<p>The project, \u201cCurriculum Co-Development\/Mentoring Graduate Students: A Short Course on Groundwater Modeling and Petroleum Hydrogeology,\u201d will have Ophori developing a curriculum for groundwater and contaminant transport modeling.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of five weeks, Ophori will teach, train and mentor 20 master\u2019s and doctoral students who are practicing hydrogeologists, petroleum engineers, civil and environmental engineers, groundwater professionals, water resources managers, geologists and hydrologists.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the project \u2013 and the CADFP program \u2013 is to create capacity building for young scientists in Nigeria who will be tasked with the investigation, management and protection of groundwater and petroleum resources. Mentoring of these students will carry on over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Ophori says he feels \u201cecstatically happy to be selected\u201d for the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] keys in perfectly with the yearnings of many African youths for beneficial technology transfer from the United States.
