{"id":220849,"date":"2023-05-04T11:08:36","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T15:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=220849"},"modified":"2023-05-04T11:08:36","modified_gmt":"2023-05-04T15:08:36","slug":"university-hosts-hiv-prevention-training-for-community-agencies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/05\/04\/university-hosts-hiv-prevention-training-for-community-agencies\/","title":{"rendered":"University Hosts HIV Prevention Training for Community Agencies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In efforts to provide substance misuse and HIV prevention services to racial\/ethnic minority males, Montclair State University recently hosted intensive intervention training for community-based agencies working to meet the behavioral health needs of people who either are at risk for contracting or are living with HIV\/AIDS.<\/p>\n<p>The training was grant-funded through the work of Montclair\u2019s partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/project-cope\/\">Communities Organizing for Prevention and Empowerment<\/a> or C.O.P.E. Initiative. The highly successful program uses multi-tiered prevention strategies, including culturally tailored curricula about substance misuse , HIV\/AIDS, and viral hepatitis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/05\/2023-05-04_aids-prevention-training-03.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/05\/2023-05-04_aids-prevention-training-03.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Student listens in classroom.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alicia Rivera \u201922, the HIV navigation specialist for the C.O.P.E. Initiative, listens to a presentation on an HIV prevention program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Montclair State University\/Paterson Prevention Navigator Initiative \u2013 led by professors Robert Reid and Pauline Garcia-Reid \u2013 received a $1 million grant from the Minority AIDS Initiative, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, under the Department of Health and Human Services. A portion of the grant funded the three-day training to teach community agencies how to implement the Mpowerment Project at the local level.<\/p>\n<p>The co-sponsoring organization, the South Jersey AIDS Education and Training Center &#8211; NJ HIV Training and Capacity Development Program, made it possible for trainers from the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) at the University of California, San Francisco, to bring their project to New Jersey.
