One of many accomplished <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/commencement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winter Commencement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> graduates, at 21, he\u2019s already a published author of a book for young ball players with big dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pinckney \u2013 better known on social media as \u201cBilly the Batboy\u201d \u2013\u00a0 has been featured in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/2023\/08\/05\/10-tips-for-keeping-youth-sports-fun-coaching\/70535014007\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">USA Today<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for his book and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCJgP66-OM9Yv_hTDLZ3wIKA\/videos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">YouTube<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> channel that features interviews and tips <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from the pros he has gotten to know, beginning as a batboy with the New Jersey Jackals, a minor league team that played for years in his hometown of Little Falls at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/09\/27\/montclair-state-university-njit-partner-to-renovate-yogi-berra-stadium\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yogi Berra Stadium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Montclair\u2019s campus before their move to Paterson in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/120523_48564_SCM-Billy-Pinckney-1.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/01\/120523_48564_SCM-Billy-Pinckney-1.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Billy Pinckney rests on his back on his baseball jacket and holds his book.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Billy Pinckney, a former New Jersey Jackals batboy, has written a book with tips on keeping youth sports fun.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In many ways, Pinckney symbolizes the spirit of determination, resilience and success that defines the Montclair graduates whose degrees will be conferred at Newark\u2019s Prudential Center. The University is a game-changer, graduating students at a higher rate than the national average and creating transformational opportunities that make a difference in the lives of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pinckney used his access to players to compile <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KAN0v9wt1wQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lessons for young athletes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> within the pages of his book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Passion Prevails: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0C8R23V5G\/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=1687450411&amp;sr=8-1)\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baseball\u2019s Top Performers Advise Youth Players on Maximizing Their Experience.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe goal was to help young players navigate their careers as they face adversity, how to deal with pressure, how to separate baseball and life, and really enjoy their playing career,\u201d Pinckney says. \u201cThat was really the main thing to inspire these young players. I dealt with some pressure while playing when I was younger. A lot of parents out there put pressure on their kids. Luckily I didn\u2019t have that but I did face pressure from some coaches that I had and realized the game wasn\u2019t as fun as it used to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Billy the Batboy, Pinckney has amassed more than 49,000 TikTok followers, 18,000 Instagram followers and nearly 5,000 YouTube followers. He has used these platforms and opportunities with professional baseball players and gained experience in the sports media world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In November, he traveled to Dubai to create content for an all-star showcase for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baseball United, the first professional baseball league in the Middle East and South Asia. During his 10 years with the Jackals, he moved from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the dugout to the press box, conducted pregame reports, created content for the video board, promoted the Jackals through social media and assisted the manager in finding players. He received a championship ring for his contributions when the team won the league title in 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He accomplished all this while also strategizing a college course load to graduate a semester early \u2013 aligning with baseball\u2019s offseason \u2013 to be ready for his next chapter in baseball and any job offers ahead of spring training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI definitely made sacrifices, but when you know that something is going to benefit you later on in life, and you know it&#8217;s what you&#8217;re meant to do, it made my decisions easier and made the sacrifices easier to manage as well,\u201d Pinckney says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Classes in sports psychology with Exercise Science and Physical Education <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">professors Rob Gilbert and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John McCarthy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">encouraged Pinckney to curate his interviews into the book. \u201cBilly is a self-starter,\u201d Gilbert says. \u201cI say that every once in a while I see a student, and I say, \u2018Wow, I wish I could buy stock in this person\u2019s future,\u2019 and Billy\u2019s one of those students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a rewarding process, definitely an incredible process as well,\u201d Pinckney says. \u201cI went into this knowing that I have an opportunity to help inspire younger players and it was also an opportunity for me to learn a lot about how to improve myself. I really took this seriously and enjoyed every minute of it.
