{"id":223278,"date":"2024-02-27T16:28:36","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T21:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=223278"},"modified":"2024-03-03T23:19:42","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T04:19:42","slug":"semester-in-la-rolls-out-the-red-carpet-for-montclair-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/02\/27\/semester-in-la-rolls-out-the-red-carpet-for-montclair-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Semester in LA Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Montclair Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Grammy Awards may be music\u2019s biggest night, but for Aidan Ping, a Montclair State University student spending the semester in Los Angeles, the 2024 Grammys struck a chord on his own personal highlight reel. Connections he\u2019s already made in Hollywood led to a gig recording interviews with the musical greats on the Grammys\u2019 red carpet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI always hoped I was going to make it somewhere in film. But if you told me, like, Grammys and before I even graduated, I would have called you a liar,\u201d says Ping, a junior Film and Television major participating in Montclair\u2019s Semester in LA program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now in its third semester, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/school-of-communication-and-media\/academic-programs\/semester-in-l-a-program\/\">Semester in LA<\/a> has Montclair students shooting for the stars, landing internships and networking alongside the other major East Coast college communication programs in film and television. \u201cMontclair now has a significant footprint in the epicenter of where that all happens,\u201d says School of Communication and Media Director Keith Strudler.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/02\/AidenPing_Internship.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/02\/AidenPing_Internship.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Students in a camera gear warehouse.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At their internship at Cinema Devices, a film engineering firm, Aidan Ping takes a selfie with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Natalie Brangaccio, a junior majoring in Filmmaking at Montclair, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the company\u2019s workshop. (Photo courtesy of Aidan Ping)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ping, who has experience in mixing and production on set at Montclair, was working at his internship with Cinema Devices, a film engineering company, when a co-worker mentioned he needed a sound mixer for the Grammys\u2019 red carpet. \u201cI spent three days doing different red carpet events, recording the audio for the handheld mic interviews for the Recording Academy,\u201d Ping says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s the type of experience becoming more common for the students taking part in the program. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We&#8217;re starting to see that people have now heard of Montclair State University. That&#8217;s opening doors for us,\u201d Strudler says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alejandro Londono, a junior <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Film and Television major, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will complete two internships over the course of the semester: one in sports media at Stadium Rant and the other as a television reviewer for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an online entertainment magazine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cTo be able to live out here and be in the middle of the industry at such a young age is a huge privilege,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\">\n<div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/02\/Madison_SemesterLA-11.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/02\/Madison_SemesterLA-11.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Madison with a &quot;SAG-AFTRA on Strike&quot; picket sign.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Madison Westenhiser shows her support during the Writers Guild of America strike that took place during her Semester in LA last fall. (Photo courtesy of Madison Westenhiser)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last fall, Madison <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Westenhiser, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Film and Television major, was offered a job to continue her internship remotely when she left Los Angeles. She\u2019s an assistant producer with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make That Paper Podcast, a show featuring interviews with artists talking about the odd jobs, side hustles and alternative income streams they find to help them pursue their artistic careers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI do a lot of the show\u2019s social media posts, along with newsletters, and now even edit some of the scripts,\u201d Westenhiser says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The podcast\u2019s co-host is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jaime Parker Stickle, a screenwriter hired by Montclair to run its Semester in LA program. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She teaches a class on the Los Angeles media industry, where she draws on her own connections to bring in guest speakers \u2013\u00a0cinematographers, showrunners, casting agents and writers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cAll people working in the industry who have held various positions leading up to who they are now,\u201d Stickle says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair alumni help the students dream big. Michael Price \u201981 (BA in Speech and Theatre), executive producer of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Simpsons<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; Marvel Studios\u2019 Adam Derengowski \u201919 (BFA in Filmmaking), production coordinator; Sean Aronold \u201921 (BFA in Filmmaking), production assistant; and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rebekka Johnson \u201901 (BFA in Theatre), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an actress on the Netflix series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Glow<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, have all shared their personal stories of what it takes to make it in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hollywood entertainment scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEvery single day you are learning about a new person and what their life was like and what obstacles they had that you may have and can figure out how to overcome,\u201d Westenhiser says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/02\/Alejandro-Londono-SemesterLA2.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/02\/Alejandro-Londono-SemesterLA2.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"A student looks into a movie camera, bathed in purple light.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alejandro Londono says, \u201cTo be able to live out here and be in the middle of the industry at such a young age is a huge privilege.\u201d (Photo courtesy Semester in LA)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students selected for the program stay on track to graduate by taking Montclair courses online while in LA. The University shares classroom space and residential housing with other East Coast schools, providing opportunities for all the students to get to know one another. They spend time together, whether hiking or touring LA, and in doing so are making connections with people who could very well be their collaborators after they graduate, whether in LA, New York or another city shaping the entertainment landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cComing out here and realizing that I\u2019m a Montclair student in the same league with NYU or Ithaca, that we&#8217;re now up to that level, if not surpassing, is a super cool feeling,\u201d says Ping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Experiencing California in itself has been an adventure. \u201cI was definitely missing Jersey but the weather and the views are unbeatable,\u201d says Ahmad Muheisen, who took part in the program last fall and will graduate in May with a degree in Sports Communication. \u201cAnd then, all the connections we gained, all the experience we received.
