{"id":223668,"date":"2024-04-03T15:39:37","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T19:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=223668"},"modified":"2024-05-13T18:23:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T22:23:38","slug":"only-in-montclair-program-helps-students-choose-a-major","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/04\/03\/only-in-montclair-program-helps-students-choose-a-major\/","title":{"rendered":"Only in Montclair: Program Helps Students Choose a Major"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Choosing a major is among the most important decisions a college student will make, and to help with this \u201cmajor decision,\u201d Montclair State University supports undergraduates with dedicated academic advisors who provide expert guidance as students explore majors aligned with their interests and career goals.<\/p>\n<p>With nearly 4,000 success stories in six years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/university-college\/\">University College<\/a> \u2013 the first and still the only program in New Jersey for undecided students \u2013 provides an academic home for undergraduates as they explore their options and make sure that the major they\u2019re selecting is the right fit.<\/p>\n<p>Montclair students, including freshmen and transfer students who have not yet selected a major, get practical advice as they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/university-college\/exploring-majors\/\">explore different majors<\/a> and prepare academically to enter the major of their choice. University College Academic Advisor Johayra Granados-Rold\u00e1n recommends that students not limit themselves to what they already know. \u201cThink about your passion areas and career goals, and how different majors align with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/university-college\/administration-staff#apc\"><b>Academic Programming Team<\/b><\/a> provides a wide variety of resources and events to help students learn more about majors, and provides opportunities for them to network with peers and faculty in those majors. University College collaborates with Career Services so that students can explore potential careers within majors, and opportunities for internship and volunteer opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell students, don&#8217;t be afraid to explore your options, but be clever about exploring strategically,\u201d says University College Academic Advisor Lindsey Hresko.<i> \u201c<\/i>Your advisor can help you find ways to take classes that might count toward General Education requirements, while still giving you opportunities to join classes that give you a chance to learn about your options. There are lots of ways you can \u2018work smarter, not harder\u2019 when it comes to determining your major.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University College\u2019s popular \u201ccrash a class\u201d provides a sneak peek at more than 65 different course options across campus. The <a href=\"https:\/\/idodeclare.podbean.com\/\"><b>I Do Declare! University College staff dressed as basketball referees cheered students as they gathered information from faculty and staff, with many students narrowing their choices.
