{"id":223821,"date":"2024-04-18T10:39:31","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T14:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=223821"},"modified":"2024-06-05T11:16:43","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T15:16:43","slug":"president-koppell-applauds-university-partners-at-spring-town-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/04\/18\/president-koppell-applauds-university-partners-at-spring-town-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"President Koppell Applauds University Partners at Spring Town Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Montclair State University President Jonathan Koppell hosted a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, April 17 attended by faculty and staff, where he reflected on a year of \u201cprogress, promise and partnership,\u201d notably the strengthening bonds with the city of Paterson, including the celebrated opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/04\/11\/montclair-state-university-opens-the-charles-j-muth-museum-of-hinchliffe-stadium\/\">Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/winter-2024\/patersons-promise\/\">One Square Mile <\/a>initiative, where Montclair students are working within the community teaching English-as-a-new-language for Spanish- and Arabic-speaking residents.<\/p>\n<p>These partnerships reflect the University\u2019s commitment to serving society and creating powerful community partnerships that make a positive impact on both communities and students, Koppell told the audience in Alexander Kasser Theater and on a livestream (see below).<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Video: President Jonathan Koppell Spring Town Hall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QUqJ7ZpUtR0?feature=oembed\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen style=\"width: 500px; height: 281px; border: 0px solid #000;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re a community with a special purpose \u2026 because what we are as a community, as partners, is a mission to deliver transformational opportunities for students from all backgrounds. That&#8217;s our assignment,\u201d Koppell said. \u201cI\u2019m 100% committed to that assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the initiatives, Montclair is working to break down barriers and create new pathways to higher education by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/10\/24\/montclair-and-bergen-community-college-sign-joint-academic-agreement\/\">partnering with community colleges<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/02\/20\/bloomfield-college-of-montclair-state-university-and-donald-m-payne-sr-school-of-technology-announce-dual-enrollment-program\/\">high schools<\/a>, and addressing statewide issues, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/04\/09\/montclair-graduate-students-pioneer-maternal-child-health-nutrition-program\/\">maternal health<\/a> and the teaching shortage with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/11\/14\/tackling-the-teacher-shortage-montclair-launches-first-nj-apprenticeship-program-backed-by-department-of-labor\/\">Teacher Certification Apprenticeship<\/a> and the nation\u2019s first Alternate Route Teacher Certification Program to attract music teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, the University will <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomfield.edu\/announcements\/integration-updates\">continue the integration<\/a> of Bloomfield College into the wider Montclair community, as well as launching a revamped Honors Program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/07\/11\/university-awarded-850000-grant-for-mental-health-support-services\/\">providing resources to help students manage their mental health<\/a>, and focusing admission growth on international recruitment, Koppell said.<\/p>\n<p>In answering questions submitted prior to the event, Koppell talked about his goals by saying, \u201cIt&#8217;s impossible for Montclair State University to be what we want it to be without functioning as a community \u2026 We need to be part of the process of revisiting everything that we do. Sometimes that means doing new things and sometimes that means doing things that other people have been doing for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to revisions in the University calendar, introducing new programs like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/04\/02\/ready-for-some-pre-college-summer-fun\/\">pre-college summer programs for high school students,<\/a> offering courses in different modalities to meet students where they want to be, and being part of the protection of American democracy as showing that Montclair is a \u201cuniversity capable of adaptation and change.
