Now, as a Res Life Community Assistant, she\u2019s one of the pros helping new students unpack both their belongings and emotions during the move-in process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fom August 24-27, 5,200 students will move into Montclair\u2019s residential halls, many leaving home for the first time. The University\u2019s Residence Life team has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/residence-life\/standardpoliciesandprocedures\/opening-and-closing-procedures\/\">compiled tips<\/a> to help make the transition into campus life easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>For Students: Peer-to-Peer Advice<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFreshman year had its struggles,\u201d admits Potter, a Social Media and Public Relations major. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to let go of the comfort and security of having your family close by, and that first night without them felt strange and lonely. Saying goodbye to my family was tough, but over time, FaceTiming every weekend helped.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>For Parents: How to Say Goodbye<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s no one-size-fits-all answer to dealing with the high school-to-college transition. It varies depending on the student\u2019s cultural background and on each individual family\u2019s needs and dynamics, says Dr. Sudha M. Wadhwani, a staff psychologist on Montclair\u2019s counseling team and mother of two college students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEach student has their level of readiness depending on how the high school years have gone, depending on whether they may have mental health concerns, whether they may have a peer-support system or already have built certain skills,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about finding that balance of how much to support and guide your student and how much to let go and empower them to learn to adult.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>On the Big Day, ID is a Must-Have<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Something Montclair students notice immediately is that their ID card is used for just about everything on campus, including accessing the residence halls, vending machines and meal plans. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Returning students need to bring their ID to check in. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New students: Bring a form of photo ID (driver&#8217;s license or passport). You will receive your Montclair ID card at check in. Follow the required steps found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/id-card\/freshman-orientation\/\">ID Cards website<\/a> to upload a photo for your ID card through the <a href=\"https:\/\/eacct-montclair-sp.transactcampus.com\/eAccounts\/AnonymousHome.aspx\">eAccounts website<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What else you\u2019ll need:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Check-in Confirmation email<\/strong>, with your move-in color, date and time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"py-0 my-0 prose-p:pt-0 prose-p:mb-2 prose-p:my-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:pt-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:mb-2 [&amp;&gt;p]:my-0\">\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\"><strong>Hawk Pass: <\/strong>The Hawk Pass shows you\u2019ve completed all move-in requirements and are approved to move in. To receive your Hawk Pass, you must:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"marker:text-quiet list-disc\">\n<li class=\"py-0 my-0 prose-p:pt-0 prose-p:mb-2 prose-p:my-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:pt-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:mb-2 [&amp;&gt;p]:my-0\">\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Submit your emergency contact info in NEST.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"py-0 my-0 prose-p:pt-0 prose-p:mb-2 prose-p:my-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:pt-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:mb-2 [&amp;&gt;p]:my-0\">\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Be fully compliant with all\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/student-health-center\/immunizations\/requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"break-word hover:text-super hover:decoration-super underline decoration-from-font underline-offset-1 transition-all duration-300\">immunization requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"py-0 my-0 prose-p:pt-0 prose-p:mb-2 prose-p:my-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:pt-0 [&amp;&gt;p]:mb-2 [&amp;&gt;p]:my-0\">\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Have an account balance of $3,000 or less,\u00a0<strong>or<\/strong>\u00a0be enrolled in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/student-accounts\/payment-options\/tuition-payment-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"break-word hover:text-super hover:decoration-super underline decoration-from-font underline-offset-1 transition-all duration-300\">payment plan<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>or<\/strong>\u00a0have enough financial aid to cover your bill.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">Hawk Passes are sent to your University email starting the week before move-in begins.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And while moving in 5,200 students seems daunting, Res Life has it down to a science \u2013 with help from Montclair\u2019s village, including Facilities and Housekeeping, the Office of Student Belonging, Enrollment Management and University Police.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Move-In Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University Police stationed at all entrance points of the University will provide directions and check Check-In Confirmation emails, Hawk Pass and photo identifications. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At your residential hall, students will have approximately 10 minutes to unload vehicles before parking into a designated parking zone.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Set Up Shop: The Essential Checklist<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether it&#8217;s your first year away at school or you&#8217;re moving back to campus, make sure you have the essentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/residence-life\/frequently-asked-questions\/what-to-bring-what-not-to-bring\/\">What to Bring and What Not to Bring<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/residence-life\/living-on-campus\/rommates-and-suitemates\/\">Roommate Expectations<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/dining-services\/about-dining\/\">Dining Locations and Hours<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s okay to miss home, and it\u2019s okay to reach out for support as you adjust,\u201d Potter says. \u201cEventually, you find a new rhythm and learn to cherish the connections you have with your hometown family and friends, while also building your independence and creating new relationships.
