{"id":224659,"date":"2024-08-19T00:09:01","date_gmt":"2024-08-19T04:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=224659"},"modified":"2024-10-09T12:45:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T16:45:00","slug":"montclair-enhances-mental-health-support-with-new-zen-dens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/08\/19\/montclair-enhances-mental-health-support-with-new-zen-dens\/","title":{"rendered":"Montclair Enhances Mental Health Support with Zen Dens and Sensory Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Updated October 10, 2024, World Mental Health Day<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair State University has expanded its commitment to student mental health with the introduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/2023\/08\/28\/zen-den\/\">Zen Dens<\/a>, relaxation spaces for students, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/library\/2024\/09\/13\/the-sensory-space-for-enhanced-comfort\/\">Sensory Space<\/a> in the library for neurodivergent individuals. These resources are part of the University&#8217;s comprehensive mental health approach, which ranges from counseling to pet therapy to reduce stigma and promote mental health awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Theatre\/Dance Den Zen Becomes a Model for Campus<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two years ago, Donna Scro Samori, a social worker and wellness coordinator for the Department of Theatre and Dance, transformed a small office in Life Hall into a meditation space, complete with aromatherapy, dim lighting and calming music to help students recharge between classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI envisioned students meditating, but often they come in to nap,\u201d says Scro Samori. \u201cThey use the meditation cushions as pillows and wrap themselves in blankets. (Photo by Mike Peters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Library Opens Welcoming Sensory Space<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sprague Library has opened a new Sensory Space designed to provide a safe, comfortable environment for individuals with specific sensory needs. The space offers lounge chairs, yoga mats, noise-canceling headphones and fidget toys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other efforts are underway. During the summer, the Student Government Association tapped alumni donors to raise funds to create more relaxation spaces across campus, ensuring students have access to spaces in the Student Center and other academic buildings for mental health support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Zen Den is a place where I would live if I could,\u201d says Student Government Association President Mikayla Houston, a senior Psychology major. \u201cYou just walk in on your own time and reset by yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why College Campuses Need Zen Dens<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The need is real. According to the Mayo Clinic, up to 44% of college students nationwide report symptoms of depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>At Montclair, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/montclair-cares\/care-team\/\">Crisis, Assessment, Response, and Education (CARE) Team<\/a>, a group of administrators who meet regularly to evaluate concerning behaviors and mental health struggles, has seen a 15% increase in case referrals each year since 2020.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We must remember that many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine-archive\/fall-winter-2022\/taking-care-of-each-other\/\">students were impacted by the pandemic<\/a> during critical developmental years,\u201d says Scro Samori. \u201cI see students struggling with independence and adjusting to college life.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Balancing school, work, and family, paying for tuition and living expenses, and uncertainty about future careers are among the challenges.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Montclair&#8217;s Comprehensive Wellness Approach\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A culture of wellness is ingrained in campus life. Montclair embraces various approaches, including group therapy, peer counseling, telehealth, arts and crafts, meditation events, and pet therapy to help students de-stress.
