{"id":224763,"date":"2024-09-11T08:19:14","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T12:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=224763"},"modified":"2024-09-12T09:10:08","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T13:10:08","slug":"9-11-day-of-service-showcases-montclair-volunteers-commitment-to-community-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/09\/11\/9-11-day-of-service-showcases-montclair-volunteers-commitment-to-community-service\/","title":{"rendered":"9\/11 Day of Service Showcases Montclair Volunteers&#8217; Commitment to Community Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair State University\u2019s commitment to public service and community partnerships is reflected by the ways student volunteers came together on the 9\/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance to help build homes, feed the hungry and organize donations at New Jersey nonprofit and service organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The meaningful acts of kindness, community service and teamwork by the University\u2019s volunteer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-community-engagement\/programs-and-initiatives\/bonner-leader-program\/\">Bonner Leaders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-community-engagement\/programs-and-initiatives\/nextgen-service-corps\/\">NextGen Service Corps<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-community-engagement\/programs-and-initiatives\/hcc-americorps-program\/\">AmeriCorps<\/a>, as well as Montclair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/greek-life\/\">sororities and fraternities<\/a>, exemplify efforts in collaborations with local communities to advance racial justice and equity, improve health and foster student achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The University was recently awarded the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/06\/14\/montclair-awarded-prestigious-carnegie-leadership-designation-for-public-service-efforts\/\">Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose Classification<\/a>, which recognizes institutions that have committed to campus-wide efforts to advance leadership in pursuit of public goods, including justice, equity, diversity and liberty. LaRosa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Inspiring Future Leaders<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair is training students to be effective in public service and to make a difference in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/06\/13\/inspiring-tomorrows-public-service-leaders\/\">NextGen Service Corps<\/a> prepares undergraduates from all disciplines for public service careers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/06\/02\/university-hosts-national-bonner-summer-leadership-institute\/\">Bonner Leader Program<\/a> provides students with civic engagement and public service opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A redesigned Honors Program inspires students to explore public service and creative leadership. The new <a href=\"http:\/\/montclair.edu\/honors\">Honors EDGE<\/a> program offers academic, experiential, and leadership opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair is also immersed in a collective impact project in Paterson called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/winter-2024\/patersons-promise\/\">\u201cOne Square Mile\u201d<\/a> focused on transforming New Jersey\u2019s third-largest and one of its poorest cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the city\u2019s public schools, Montclair faculty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-of-pedagogy\/\">support teachers<\/a> and school leaders in the district\u2019s multicultural classrooms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Upward Bound prepares Paterson high schoolers for college. Last year, every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/upward-bound\/\">Upward Bound<\/a> participant who graduated from high school was accepted into a post-secondary degree program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Communities Organizing for Prevention and Empowerment (C.O.P.E.) Initiative features Montclair students assisting in classes aimed at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/project-cope\/\"> preventing substance misuse and the spread of HIV<\/a> among African American and Latino youths.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the city\u2019s streets, there are efforts to address <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2023\/07\/11\/university-launches-first-of-its-kind-harm-reduction-certificate-program\/\">harm reduction and criminal justice reforms<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The University\u2019s growing partnership also includes the revival of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/04\/11\/montclair-state-university-opens-the-charles-j-muth-museum-of-hinchliffe-stadium\/\">Hinchliffe Stadium<\/a>, one of America\u2019s last remaining Negro League ballparks. (Photo by Mike Peters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>How Montclair Observed the 2024 Day of Service and Remembrance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Saturday, September 7, as in years past, students, faculty and staff, spread out across the region to build homes, clean parks, organize food pantry donations, pack book bags and work with adults with cerebral palsy, among other activities. A campus-wide donation drive contributed school supplies for students at Eastside High School in Paterson. A record number 360 volunteers participated from Montclair and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomfield.edu\/\">Bloomfield College of Montclair State University<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-community-engagement\/\">Center for Community Engagement<\/a> sponsors the events to allow students to serve in a meaningful way, honoring all those who died and responded and rekindling the spirit of unity that arose in America in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
