Through non-partisan voter registration events and engagement competitions like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/state\/nj-ballot-bowl.shtml\">Ballot Bowl,<\/a> students are encouraged to take part in civic engagement and make their voices heard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These efforts are crucial. The 18 to 29-year-old age group is one of the fastest-growing voting blocs in the country. Younger voters had a notable impact in recent elections, with over 50% of those aged 18 to 29 turning out to vote in the 2020 presidential election, according to the U.S. Elections Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI look back to 2020 when New Jersey led the nation in youth voter turnout,\u201d said Lieutenant Governor Tahesha L. Way. \u201cThe goal is not only to match that turnout, but to surpass those numbers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Way was speaking during the Ballot Bowl contest launch, held on September 16 at William Paterson University to tap into the competitive spirit of New Jersey\u2019s colleges and universities. LaRosa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ballot Bowl launch coincided with <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalvoterregistrationday.org\/\">National Voter Registration Day<\/a>, where a giant patriotic slide, music and games on Montclair&#8217;s campus attracted hundreds of students to register and pledge to vote. Assemblyman Al Barlas (R-District 40) and Assemblywoman Andrea Katz (D-District 8) talked with students on the importance of voting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe aim to empower every student to have a voice,\u201d said Montclair President Jonathan Koppell. \u201cThis isn\u2019t just about voter registration; it\u2019s about shaping the future of our communities, state and country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Montclair Campus &#8216;Focused&#8217; on Election 2024<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/school-of-communication-and-media\/student-productions\/\">student media<\/a> outlets are also supporting the initiative. LaRosa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beyond voter registration,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/civic-and-voter-engagement\/register-to-vote\/\"> Montclair_Votes<\/a> aims to foster nonpartisan discussions. \u201cThe challenge with elections is that you\u2019re either engaged or you\u2019re not,\u201d says Warren Rigby &#8217;23, &#8217;24 MA, coordinator for Montclair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/civic-and-voter-engagement\/\">Office of Civic and Voter Engagement,<\/a> which sponsors the Montclair_Votes events. \u201cMy role is to spark conversations about why some students don\u2019t feel confident enough to make an informed voting decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rigby also stresses the importance of creating a voting plan, whether that means voting by mail, participating in early voting or showing up at the polls on Election Day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Montclair spans two congressional districts, which can be confusing for students living on campus who choose to vote locally. To address this, Rigby&#8217;s office will provide detailed information about polling locations, ballot options and voting procedures based on each student&#8217;s residence. <em>Insight into Diversity<\/em> highlighted Montclair among colleges that have earned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insightintodiversity.com\/colleges-step-up-for-2024-election\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_content=sept_20_2024&amp;utm_campaign=in_the_know\">Voter Friendly Campus<\/a> designation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Do I Register to Vote?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair uses an <a href=\"\/\/montclair.turbovote.org\/?r=RHN\">online voter registration<\/a> system that makes it easier than ever to get registered. <strong>Register before the deadline of Tuesday, October 15.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u201cLast Chance Voter Registration\u201d event will be held on Monday, October 14 and will be your last chance to make sure your voice is heard in the general election on Tuesday, November 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Not Sure Where You Are Registered?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewgoodman.org\/myvoteeverywhere\/montclair-state-university\/\">Andrew Goodman Foundation website<\/a> to find out what address you are registered with and where your ballot will be mailed. If it turns out you are registered at your home address and you live on campus, you can either update your voter registration to Montclair, Bloomfield or plan a trip home before Election Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Do I Vote by Mail?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any registered voter may apply for vote-by-mail by completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/state\/elections\/vote-by-mail.shtml#applications\">Application for Vote-By-Mail Ballot<\/a> and returning the application to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/state\/elections\/vote-county-election-officials.shtml\">County Clerk<\/a> and should be received sometime in early to mid-October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you would like to receive your ballot by mail, you must request your ballot at least seven (7) days before the election. Once you receive your ballot, fill it out according to the instructions and mail it in. The ballots will have free postage and must be postmarked by Tuesday, November 3 and received by the Board of Elections by Tuesday, November 10 for your vote to count.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Should I Do if I\u2019m Studying Abroad During Election Season?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To request a ballot from overseas, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fvap.gov\/\">Federal Voter Assistance Program<\/a>, a U.S. government website for overseas American military and citizen voters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What If I\u2019m Not Eligible to Vote?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re not eligible to vote, it&#8217;s important to stay informed about the issues that affect you as a student. Engage in conversations with friends to help make voting and civil discourse a regular part of your life.<\/p>\n<p>Montclair is now part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifyamerica.org\/civicgym\/montclair\">Unify America,<\/a> a nonpartisan organization that brings together college students with different perspectives to foster civil and productive discussions.
