{"id":224907,"date":"2024-10-03T14:14:33","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T18:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=224907"},"modified":"2024-10-03T14:24:52","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T18:24:52","slug":"nearly-1m-in-americorps-funding-allows-montclair-students-to-continue-serving-nj-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/10\/03\/nearly-1m-in-americorps-funding-allows-montclair-students-to-continue-serving-nj-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly $1M in AmeriCorps Funding Allows Montclair Students to Continue Serving NJ Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair State University has received two grants totaling nearly $1 million to continue the work of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-community-engagement\/programs-and-initiatives\/hcc-americorps-program\/\">AmeriCorps Healthy Communities Corps<\/a>, focusing on aiding underserved communities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2020\/12\/17\/nj-covid-19-service-corps-prepares-for-recovery\/\">still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>. The funds were awarded by the NJ Commission on National and Community Service, which supports initiatives aimed at improving civic engagement and community service across New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Primary Grants<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>A $731,407 grant<\/strong> will help vulnerable communities address health disparities exacerbated by COVID-19 and build a pipeline of allied health workers trained in community service, clinical practice and social determinants of health.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>A $244,902 AmeriCorps Formula Grant<\/strong> will expand the program\u2019s capacity to assist with public health, education and social services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AmeriCorps members will provide direct services as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Health Services Volunteers<\/strong>: Members will disseminate information, plan events and run programming related to public health issues, including sustainability, mental health and food insecurity, increasing community health and wellness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Team Members<\/strong>: These members will assist individuals impacted by COVID-19, including those experiencing language loss, by providing assessments and recovery-related services in schools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Tutors and Mentors<\/strong>: Serving in high-need schools, such as Eastside High School in Paterson, these members will build relationships with students, teachers and the community, fostering a passion for learning and increasing academic success.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Commitment to Public Service<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-community-engagement\/\">Office for Community Engagement and Partnerships<\/a> leads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/09\/11\/9-11-day-of-service-showcases-montclair-volunteers-commitment-to-community-service\/\">Montclair\u2019s efforts to improve New Jersey communities<\/a>, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/winter-2024\/patersons-promise\/\">One Square Mile initiative in Paterson<\/a>. This collective impact project focuses on racial justice, equity, public health and student achievement in New Jersey\u2019s third-largest city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs President Jonathan Koppell aims to establish Montclair as the leading public service institution in the state, programs like AmeriCorps play a crucial role,\u201d says Bryan D. Murdock, Associate Vice President of Community Partnerships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor the past 15 years, Montclair students participating in AmeriCorps have worked collaboratively with community partners across New Jersey. Together, they have tackled pressing issues in education, public health, homelessness and food insecurity, demonstrating the University\u2019s commitment to addressing real-world challenges and fostering community engagement,\u201d Murdock adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair was recently awarded the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2024\/06\/14\/montclair-awarded-prestigious-carnegie-leadership-designation-for-public-service-efforts\/\">Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose Classification<\/a>, which recognizes institutions committed to leadership in pursuit of public goods, including justice, equity, diversity and liberty.
