Have a course you’ve been meaning to take but haven’t had the time? Looking to graduate early? Then Summer Sessions at Montclair State University may be for you.

Summer Sessions allow students to use the summer “break” to continue pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies. Running from May through August, Summer Sessions offer a wide variety of courses in all areas of study including the arts, business, computer science, education, human services, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences and social sciences. Courses are conveniently offered in online, hybrid or in-person formats providing students with flexibility and choice.

Summer Session courses are open to Montclair students as well as visiting students currently enrolled at other colleges and universities, students who are accepted to begin their college or university studies in the fall, and high-achieving high school juniors and seniors through Early College Programs.

Summer Sessions Offer Convenient Options

In addition to the wide range of courses offered, students have the option of choosing from among six sessions that vary in length: a 14-week session, two 7-week sessions and three 4-week sessions beginning on different dates during the summer. Together with the different formats offered – online, hybrid and in-person – there are plenty of options for finding the perfect fit for summer studies.

According to Summer Sessions Director Kirsten Tripodi, many students find a 4-week session to be a good choice for them because it’s a single course that they can concentrate on fully without worrying about any other subjects.

“A lot of students feel challenged by subjects such as math or science when taking multiple courses, but when they only have that one subject to focus on, they’re much more successful academically,” she says.

The Montclair Advantage

Tripodi says that since Montclair is a large public university, its Summer Sessions program has advantages over many summer programs offered by other institutions in New Jersey.

“We’re a state institution so we can not only offer a very affordable tuition rate, but also convenience with the multitude of modalities and sessions,” she says. “We’re a big enough institution that we’re running a lot of Summer Session classes in those different ways. We can give visiting students and our students a lot more choices.”

Complete Support Services

Whether early graduation is your goal or you just want to focus on one course that interests you, you’ll find all the resources and support you need. Summer Sessions staff run informational webinars, they have created videos on topics such as “How to Register” and “How to Apply,” and are always available by email at summer@montclair.edu.

Academic advisors help students make sure that the courses they are taking are appropriate and keep them on track, and the financial aid experts in Red Hawk Central can assist with financing questions and solutions. “Any Montclair State University student who’s interested in taking summer classes should be working with Red Hawk Central to see what financial aid would apply,” advises Tripodi.

Fast-Track Your Education

Montclair recently realigned its academic calendar to make the fall, summer and spring terms all of equal length: 14 weeks. This means that students can take as many classes during Summer Sessions as they can during the fall and spring terms, fast-tracking their path to a degree.

“Summer Sessions offers students a really incredible opportunity to get ahead,” says Tripodi. “Taking two or three courses each summer for two summers is equal to a full term of classes. Students can, in fact, graduate in three years. We’ve done the math!”

Ready to Start Your Montclair Journey?

Prospective Students: It’s not too late to apply!
