Sumi Hagiwara

Assistant Professor, Department of Early Childhood, Elementary Education and Literacy Education

An expert on diversity and culture and science education, Dr. Sumi Hagiwara, Assistant Professor in Montclair State University’s Department of Early Childhood, Elementary Education, and Literacy Education, examines the ways “home culture” influences immigrant parents’ involvement in schools. A regular contributor to peer journals, she is a co-editor of the recently published book “Change Agents in Science Education.”

Dr. Hagiwara is a co-creator of epiSTEMic, a summer program for children in grades K-6 that develops their knowledge and understanding of the STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics --disciplines. Offered by the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary Education, and Literacy Education, epiSTEMic partners with the ECELE Summer Literacy Enrichment Camp and the CEHS ADP Center.
