- Serve as a guide and resource to students and family members during Orientation Programs.
- Direct students and families throughout campus during Orientation Programs.
- Assist with setting up for all Orientation sessions around campus.
- Assist with check-in for each Orientation session.
- Serve as a leader and group facilitator to a group of students with information regarding campus resources, campus policies, and procedures, as well as other important topics.
- Prepare materials for Orientation Programs including stuffing name tags and all bags with University marketing materials.
Eligible candidates must:
- Must be a current undergraduate student at Montclair State University. *Seniors graduating May 2024 are not eligible to apply*
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher at the end of the fall 2023 semester. (GPAs will be verified)
- Maintain a 2.75 GPA throughout the spring 2024 semester.
- Have earned at least 12 credits at Montclair State by the end of the fall 2023 semester.
- Have no open Conduct cases through the Office of Dean of Students and the Office of Residential Education. Judicial records will be reviewed by the Dean of Students.
- Possess leadership potential as evidenced by previous leadership experiences, recommendations, and staff evaluations.
- Demonstrate high levels of maturity emotional stability, flexibility, and willingness to accept responsibility and direction.
- Embody strong interpersonal skills through proven ability to interact effectively with others.
Each Orientation Leader will be responsible for meeting the goals and objectives of the Office of Student Belonging (OSB). Our primary focus is the development of students and to promote their educational and personal growth. Orientation Leaders are held accountable for student relationships and contacts, community development, policy enforcement, and communications with other team members, the OSB staff, and campus partners.
Orientation Leaders MUST:
- Present themselves as positive role models.
- Have a working knowledge of the different aspects of the university in order to appropriately assist and serve as effective liaisons between students and other members of the University community.
- Possess the emotional maturity necessary to cope with the daily decisions involved in working with new students and family members.
- Demonstrate a professional attitude, the willingness to lead, solve problems, be a team player, follow and take directions, and be engaged in assisting new students.
- Be committed to their own personal and academic growth as well as managing their time, work, and social lives.
- Enforce and abide by all Montclair State rules, regulations, and policies.
- Be flexible and be able to work under pressure.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills.
Mandatory Spring Training: Two Wednesdays, during the Common Hour period: TBA. Orientation Leaders are expected to participate in the mandatory Orientation Leader Spring Training which includes an online training program in Canvas. During spring training, OLs will begin the process of team building and learn leadership skills. (Please Note: Spring training is unpaid. Payment begins in the summer).
Summer Training, Orientation Preparation, & Orientation: TBA + Red Hawk Day
Orientation Leaders must be available during the summer for all training sessions, orientation prep, and orientation sessions.
Each training & Orientation session is mandatory for every OL as it is the core of this position. If you foresee any conflicts with any of the dates, you should not apply.
- Enrollment in Summer Classes & Outside Employment: OLs are eligible to enroll in summer courses and outside employment as long as they do not interfere with any training or work obligations (Pre & Post Session summer courses are recommended) Please plan accordingly.
- Compensation: Each OL will receive a stipend amount that will be disbursed bi-weekly throughout August – September. Should an OL leave the position prior to the last day of Orientation, compensation will be prorated.

Recommendation – within the Online Application, list the Name and Email address of your reference in the Reference section of the application. We are not collecting recommendation letters at this time. Two (2) references are required.
