Students have multiple opportunities to get involved as student leaders on campus, including being mentors to new, first-year students entering and experiencing Montclair State University during their freshman year. The following opportunities, offered as a collaboration between the Divisions of Academic Affairs and Student Development and Campus Life, are available for current, non-graduating undergraduate students seeking campus involvement and leadership beginning this coming summer 2023 through spring 2024.
Students who are interested in furthering their mentoring skills and expertise for the entirety of the academic year are strongly encouraged to apply for the Orientation Leader and University Fellows Joint Position and/or the Orientation Mentor role.
Applications are now open! The deadline to apply is Tuesday, February 14 at 11:59 p.m.
All returning Orientation Leaders or University Fellows must submit an application to apply for any of the following roles by the January 31 deadline.
Orientation Leaders are committed to their roles for Summer 2023.
Orientation Leaders are student leaders who possess a strong desire to work with a population of new students and their family members to support their transition as new members of the Montclair State community. Orientation Leaders are responsible for guiding new students and families through activities during Red Hawk Orientation (held in August) and on Red Hawk Day. Additionally, Orientation Leaders:
- Direct students and families throughout campus during Orientation.
- Assist with set up for all Orientation sessions around campus.
- Assist with check in for each Orientation session.
- Serve as a leader and group facilitator to a group of students with information regarding campus resources, campus policies and procedures, as well as other important topics.
- Prepare materials for Orientation including stuffing name tags and all bags with University marketing materials.

University Fellows are committed to one (1) academic year of service, beginning Fall 2023 through Spring 2024.
University Fellows are a dynamic team of undergraduate students who provide support, guidance and mentoring to first-year students throughout their first two semesters at Montclair State University. Each University Fellow is assigned to one section of the New Student Seminar and works in collaboration with the instructor and the other Fellows.
Each University Fellow will be expected to facilitate small group discussions during class, assist with course instruction, provide support during course selection and registration, and serve as a referral resource for peers. Each Fellow will have an average of 25 mentees and will be expected to commit to a minimum of three (3) hours of weekly responsibilities in this role. Other responsibilities may include support of college events, programs, and initiatives that may occur in the evenings or on the weekends.

Joint Position Leaders are committed to their role beginning Summer 2023 through Spring 2024.
Students interested in supporting new, first-year students throughout their freshman year experience, beginning with Red Hawk Orientation, are encouraged to apply for the Orientation Leader and University Fellows Joint Position. Students who are not available to participate in the Joint Position for the extended academic year can, instead, apply for either position.

Orientation Mentors (OMs) are committed to their roles for Summer 2023 only or Summer 2023 – Spring 2024 if you’re interested in also serving as a University Fellow.
This new opportunity is designed for current or previous Orientation Leaders, University Fellows and students with previous campus leadership experience. Students interested in pursuing a leadership role with the opportunity to mentor new Orientation Leaders and University Fellows throughout the summer are strongly encouraged to apply.
Orientation Mentors (OMs) are responsible for guiding new student groups and Orientation Leaders through activities during Red Hawk Orientation (held in August) and on Red Hawk Day.

Applicants must:
- Be a current, non-graduating undergraduate student at Montclair State University.
- Students graduating in May or August 2023 are ineligible to apply.
- Students graduating in December 2023 are ineligible to apply for the Joint Position or for the University Fellows Program.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
- Have completed at least one (1) semester and have 12 credits earned at Montclair State.
- Have no open conduct cases with either the Office of the Dean of Students or Residential Life.
Students applying for the Joint Position or University Fellows must also:
- Successfully complete New Student Seminar with a B- or better.
Applications for all First-Year Experience Leaders open Thursday, January 19 at 12 p.m.
The deadline to apply is Tuesday, February 14 at 11:59 p.m.

Interview Timeline
There will be two Group Process Interview Days held in February for new applicants. Applicants will only need to attend one Group Interview Day, dependent on their availability, on either of the following dates:
- Friday, February 17, 2 – 4 p.m.
- Wednesday, February 22, 2 – 4 p.m.
Applicants who advance in the process will then be interviewed individually, Monday, February 20 through Friday, March 3.
