Dear Colleagues, September 2014
Your Emeriti Association has had a very successful year.
First of all we have welcomed to the Emeriti the following professors: Tom Devlin, Harold Flint, Serpil Leveen, Susan Schwager, Mary Lou West, Ken Wolff, Bill Batkay, Claire Taub, Peter Pastor, Opoku Agyeman. We look forward to working with these new emeriti during the coming years.
Sadly we lost our corresponding secretary, Rosemarie McCauley. Rosemarie worked indefatigably to make our organization relevant and attractive to the membership. Truly she is missed. We remember her along with Agnes O’Connell, whose vision led to the founding of our Association.
As you know Chaim Zemach is also an emeritus of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra where he played cello. His association with the Met led to his obtaining a number of tickets for the dress rehearsal of Bellini’s opera La Sonnambula. Chaim’s generosity also enabled members to experience a modern version of La Traviata with Placido Domingo last year.
Your Executive Committee (Macaluso, Attanasio, Sullivan, Schantz, Kelly) voted to become a sponsor of the 2014 Annual Scholarship Dinner on March 8, 2014. The generosity of the Emeriti members enabled the Association to contribute $500 to the astonishing goal of $500,000 and, “Montclair State’s mission to provide our students with affordable access to an exceptional education.” President Cole. The highlight of the evening was the extraordinary student performance of selections from 42nd Street.
There exists an international organization for emeriti professors: AROHE Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education. Check out their website http//www.arohe.org where you will find their purpose which is relevant to us. AROHE is a dynamic member network that advocates for, educates, and serves campus-based organizations for retired faculty and staff. By promoting a culture that values and encourages retirees’ continuing contributions to campus and community life, AROHE helps colleges and universities to harness the remarkable talents of their retired faculty and staff to further the missions of their institutions. Your executive committee would like your input as to whether we should join this association.
Thanks to the efforts and collegiality of the Montclair State University Emeriti Association, the Bergen Community Colleges Professors Emeriti Association received both inspiration and advice in developing their organization. Our association shared in the early organizational efforts of Bergen Community College faculty in 2008.
Hospitality and advice were extended to Professor Lois Sullivan of Bergen Community College. The BCC Board of Trustees approved of the Bergen Community Colleges Professors Emeriti Association on July 10, 2010. Activities and programs began at Bergen Community College on October 16, 2011. They were very grateful in the role that MSUEA played in their establishment.
Professor Rosemarie McCauley and Dean Al Rossetti served on the Bergen Community College Secretarial Science Advisory Board during the 70’s and 80’s.
