contacting students<\/p>\n<p>It is the students\u2019 responsibility to regularly check NEST and their Montclair State email for any updates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NEST<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NEST allows students to review and manage their administrative activities including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Financial Aid<\/li>\n<li>Billing<\/li>\n<li>Holds<\/li>\n<li>Direct Deposit<\/li>\n<li>Registration<\/li>\n<li>Class Schedule<\/li>\n<li>Grades<\/li>\n<li>Student Forms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is Financial Aid?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Financial Aid is a comprehensive term that includes<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grants<\/li>\n<li>Work<\/li>\n<li>Scholarships<\/li>\n<li>Loans<\/li>\n<li>Any funds that do not\u00a0come from you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Grants (Do not need to be paid back)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eligibility is determined by your FAFSA application<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Federal Pell and SEOG<\/li>\n<li>Institutional grant eligibility<\/li>\n<li>NJ Tuition Aid Grant (NJ TAG)\n<ul>\n<li>Students must complete the State Application at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njgrants.org\/\">www.njgrants.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li>This process is required for NJ TAG, EOF, NJ Stars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Work Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on EFC eligibility and awarded on a first come, first awarded basis<\/li>\n<li>Students <em>must<\/em> get a job on campus to receive these funds\n<ul>\n<li>Paid to the student biweekly, not to the bill<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stafford Loans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Federal loans for students enrolled at least half-time<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the student\u2019s name<\/li>\n<li>Fixed interest rate <em>(4.53% 19-20 academic year interest rate)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Typically most affordable type of student loans<\/li>\n<li>Repayment 6 months after student is no longer enrolled at least half-time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Subsidized<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interest does not accrue while student is enrolled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Unsubsidized<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interest does accrue while student is enrolled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students must go to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/studentloans.gov\/myDirectLoan\/index.action\" target=\"_blank\">studentloans.gov\u00a0<\/a>and sign the master promissory note and complete entrance counseling in order for loans to pay against the account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parent PLUS Loan<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Federal loan for parents of dependent undergraduate students to help pay education expenses<\/li>\n<li>If PLUS loan is denied, additional unsubsidized loan is applied in student\u2019s name<\/li>\n<li>To apply visit <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/studentloans.gov\/myDirectLoan\/index.action\" target=\"_blank\">studentloans.gov<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Credit check required\n<ul>\n<li>Repayment Options:\n<ul>\n<li>Immediate monthly repayment<\/li>\n<li>Interest only repayment<\/li>\n<li>Complete deferment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studentloans.gov\/myDirectLoan\/index.action\">StudentLoans.Gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students<\/strong> will use this website to sign their master promissory note and complete the entrance counseling for their Stafford loans<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parents<\/strong> will use this website to apply for the Parent PLUS loan and sign the promissory note for the PLUS loan<\/p>\n<p><strong>Private Loans<\/strong> \u2013 Student loan funds that are offered through banks or educational loan lenders<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can be borrowed by student and\/or parent<\/li>\n<li>Students will need a co-signer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/ELMselect.com\" target=\"_blank\">ELMselect.com<\/a> \u2013 will provide you with a list of historical private lenders, while\u00a0allowing you to access and compare private loan interest rates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Truth in Lending Act<\/strong> \u2013 requires a number of steps to be taken by the borrower and the lender before a loan can be disbursed<\/p>\n<p><strong>When Should I Apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our Recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not apply for Parent PLUS or private loans until July (Credit checks expire)<\/li>\n<li>Apply for the whole academic year<\/li>\n<li>Have your finances sorted out no later than July<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Bills are due in August.<\/strong>\u00a0 Start Researching Now!<\/h3>\n<h3>Scholarships<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Merit Based Scholarships<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Offered through the <u><strong>Undergraduate Admissions Office<\/strong><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Departmental Scholarships<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on your major<\/li>\n<li>Students can apply after attending MSU for at least 1 semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Outside Scholarships (private groups)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HS Guidance Office<\/li>\n<li>Place of employment<\/li>\n<li>Church<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/paying-for-college\/\">View Paying for College web page.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Can My Student Be Considered Independent?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are only a few cases in which the federal government considers a student independent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 years old or older<\/li>\n<li>Married<\/li>\n<li>Have a child of their own which the student supports<\/li>\n<li>Veterans<\/li>\n<li>Orphan or ward of the court<\/li>\n<li>Homeless<\/li>\n<li>In a legal guardianship<\/li>\n<li>Graduate Student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Special Circumstances<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Government allows review of a financial aid award package if there was a loss of income due to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unemployment<\/li>\n<li>Loss of untaxed benefit (social security benefits, child support, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Separation\/Divorce<\/li>\n<li>Death of a wage earner<\/li>\n<li>Medical expenses that have been itemized on your federal tax return<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/paying-for-college\/application-process\/request-for-review\/\">View Request for Review web page.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why Doesn&#8217;t Montclair Have My FAFSA?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Parent AND\/OR student did not sign the FAFSA<\/li>\n<li>You did not apply Montclair\u2019s school code on FAFSA (002617)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important that student go back to the FAFSA 48 hours after completing it to ensure that it was correctly processed.<\/p>\n<h3>Red Hawk Dollars and Books<\/h3>\n<p>Excess funds can be moved to Red Hawk
