parents apply (credit check required)<\/li>\n<li>Alternative Private Loans &#8211; anyone can apply (credit check required)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Types of Aid: Work Study<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Jobs on campus<\/li>\n<li>Meet eligibility criteria<\/li>\n<li>Funding comes from government instead of department budget<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Keep Calm and File Your FAFSA<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>To ensure maximum consideration for aid, check requirements for each college:<\/li>\n<li>Required application materials<\/li>\n<li>Priority Deadline: February 1st<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Application Process<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Every school has different requirements<\/li>\n<li>Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)\n<ul>\n<li>FAFSA available as of <em>October 1st<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Prior-prior year update (use 2017 income data for 19-20 FAFSA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Montclair State University\u2019s <em>Priority Deadline <\/em>is <em>February 1st<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Steps to Receiving Aid: Step 1 \u2013 FSA ID<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply for an FSA ID\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fsaid.ed.gov\/npas\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">fsaid.ed.gov<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The student and parent need their own <strong>separate<\/strong> FSA ID\u2019s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Step 2 &#8211; Complete the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\">FAFSA<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>For both student and parent\n<ul>\n<li>If certain tax filing conditions are met:\n<ul>\n<li>FAFSA will take you to the IRS website to auto complete some of the income data<\/li>\n<li>Data that comes back into the FAFSA will be cloaked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Montclair State Universite recommends you use the DRT\n<ul>\n<li>Eliminates some paperwork later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Data to Report<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Income: Prior Prior (2017)<\/li>\n<li>Savings\/Investments:\u00a0 As of filing date<\/li>\n<li>Family Size : Project for academic year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\u00a0Remember\u2026<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>NJ residents must complete the <em>additional<\/em> state questionnaire for the Tuition Aid Grant<\/li>\n<li>Once submitted, use the link from the FAFSA confirmation page to HESAA\u2019s NJFAMS portal to complete the additional data elements for Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) and NJ STARS (II) eligibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If You Forget&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Go directly to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njgrants.org\/\">www.njgrants.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Applicants who bypass answering the State questions, should log into NJFAMS to create a user ID and password to check and complete any outstanding items on their \u201cTo Do\u201d list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Step 3 \u2013 Check the SAR<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Once you submit the FAFSA, you will receive a <strong>Student Aid Report (SAR)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>via email<\/li>\n<li><em>Check for errors or omissions<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If you cannot see your SAR, you may have errors that have to be corrected on the FAFSA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>FAFSA is a Snapshot of Your Current Financial Situation<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Update your FAFSA <em>only<\/em> if you made a mistake<\/li>\n<li>Any other updates should go through the Financial Aid office<\/li>\n<li>Constantly updating your FAFSA can create issues with your aid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Common Mistakes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Using incorrect Social Security Numbers<\/li>\n<li>Putting parent income information in student area<\/li>\n<li>Listing income tax paid as equal to total income<\/li>\n<li>Incorrect marital status for parent(s)<\/li>\n<li>Leaving questions blank (0 is an answer)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where Does FAFSA Go?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Federal processor<\/li>\n<li>Social Security Administration<\/li>\n<li>Homeland Security<\/li>\n<li>Selective Service<\/li>\n<li>IRS<\/li>\n<li>Schools Listed<\/li>\n<li>State of NJ (HESAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Aid Eligibility<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>High School Diploma or Equivalent<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment in an eligible program<\/li>\n<li>U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen<\/li>\n<li>Valid Social Security Number<\/li>\n<li>Sign certifying statements on the FAFSA<\/li>\n<li>Must answer the drug question<\/li>\n<li>Male students <em><strong>must<\/strong><\/em> be registered with Selective Service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Remember!<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>This is financial AID not a GIFT<\/li>\n<li>In most cases, families will have some financial responsibility.
