{"id":39,"date":"2017-11-28T15:07:50","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T15:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/?page_id=39"},"modified":"2026-01-23T08:06:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T13:06:28","slug":"financial-aid-checklist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/financial-aid\/financial-aid-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial Aid Checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Complete the FAFSA\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>Go to:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/\">studentaid.gov<\/a> <strong>and use Montclair State University\u2019s School Code: 002617<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Priority Deadline:<\/strong> March 1, 2026<\/p>\n<p>Sign electronically with your <strong>FSA ID<\/strong> (student and parent, if applicable).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If an NJ resident, log on to <a href=\"https:\/\/njfams.hesaa.org\/\">HESAA<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Set up an account (student only).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Respond to any requests for information from HESAA, if any.\u00a0 Send directly to HESAA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Review Your FAFSA Submission Summary &lpar;FSS&rpar;<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>The FSS shows what you reported on the FAFSA. An email from Federal Student Aid will tell you when it is ready to be viewed online.\n<ul>\n<li>Check for any mistakes.<\/li>\n<li>If you made a mistake, you may log back onto FAFSA to make a correction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The FSS will also tell you if you were selected for federal verification. If so, check your Montclair State University email regularly for additional requests for information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Submit Any Missing Documentation<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p>Log on to <a href=\"http:\/\/Montclair.verifymyfafsa.com\">StudentForms<\/a> to review missing forms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Email reminders are sent regularly if we require any additional documentation or forms.<\/li>\n<li>Please submit this information ASAP.\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Most documents can be uploaded using the <a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.verifymyfafsa.com\/\">StudentForms portal.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Review Your Financial Aid<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/how-to-guides\/how-to-review-financial-aid-awards\/\"><strong>Aid can be viewed electronically on NEST<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Returning students receive their financial aid notifications after spring grades are posted in May.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Accept&comma; Adjust or Decline Your Student Loan&lpar;s&rpar; on NEST<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p>Borrowing a Stafford loan for the first time? You must also complete two steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete Entrance Counseling on <a href=\"http:\/\/studentaid.gov\">studentaid.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN) on <a href=\"http:\/\/studentaid.gov\">studentaid.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Returning Students: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/how-to-view-your-satisfactory-academic-progress-sap-status-on-nest\/\">Check Your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Status<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continuing students must meet minimum SAP standards to academically qualify for financial aid (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/financial-aid\/sap-regulations\/satisfactory-academic-progress-sap\/\">read our policy online<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Students who do not meet SAP will be contacted in June to submit an appeal. The submission deadline is strict. Appeals are reviewed by the committee in accordance with federal regulations and final decisions are returned in early August.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Pay Your Bill <\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p><strong>See <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/student-accounts\/payment-deadlines\/\">Payment Deadlines<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You have to pay the difference between your charges and any financial aid posted through one or more of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/student-accounts\/payment-options\/\">Payment Options<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/student-accounts\/tuition-payment-plan\/\">Tuition Payment Plan<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Other student loan options: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/financial-aid\/loans\/federal-parent-loans-plus\/\">Federal Parent PLUS loan<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/red-hawk-central\/financial-aid\/loans\/private-educational-loans\/\">private loan<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Apply for Outside Scholarships Regularly<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Use outside scholarship search engines.
