Winter Housing

Winter 2021 Housing Process

This information is for current fall 2020 residents ONLY. Any student who is applying for spring 2021 housing is not eligible for Winter Break Housing.

We wanted to take an opportunity to remind you all of how the academic semester and student housing will work for the remainder of the fall and winter semesters:

  • Housing became available as of August 10, 2020.
  • Fall semester began August 24, 2020.
  • All on-campus instruction ends Wednesday, November 25, after which all class instruction and exams are remote.
  • Fall semester end date: December 14, 2020.

Regular checkout from housing will be on Wednesday, November 25. However, students who wish to stay until December 14 may do so.

  • Students who check out on Wednesday, November 25 must do so by 1 p.m.
  • Students who plan to stay in housing until December 14 are strongly advised to remain on campus for the Thanksgiving weekend.
  • Students who plan to stay in housing until December 14 but wish to return home for the Thanksgiving weekend will be required to quarantine upon return to the residence halls for 14 days.

Winter break housing, from December 15, 2020, to January 17, 2021, is available to students who are registered for classes in the Winter or spring term. The rates for Winter Break Housing is $700.00 for a double room or $900.00 for a single room.

All students must log in to the Residential Management System (RMS) starting October 5, 2020, to indicate if they plan to check out on November 25, or to stay until December 14, and to indicate if they wish to stay in housing during the Winter Break.

  1. Log into the Residential Management System (RMS) using your NetID and password
  2. Click on “Current Student”
  3. Scroll down to the Break Housing section of your homepage.
  4. Click “Next Step” after Fall Break Retention.
  5. Read all directions to retain your current space for the fall break retention period (November 25 – December 15)
  6. Be sure to click “Finish” once you are complete.
  7. Go back to your homepage, and click “Next Step” after Winter Break Retention.
  8. Read all directions to retain your current space for the winter break retention period (December 15 – January 17)
  9. Be sure to click “Finish” once you are complete.

This process must be completed no later than the extended deadline of Wednesday, October 21, 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about break housing:

  • Will I have to pay for break housing?
    • As per the Housing Agreement break housing is not included in the current housing charges. There will be a charge for break housing. Students will be charged from December 15 until January 17.
      • The rates for Break will be as followed:
        • Double Room: $700.00
        • Single Room: $900.00
    • Students who need financial assistance should contact the Office of Financial Aid as soon as possible.
  • Am I getting a refund on housing because I will be leaving housing before the end of the semester?
    • No, this semester’s in-person class sessions were scheduled from August 24 to November 25. The housing term is from August 10 until November 25; however, students may remain until December 14 at no additional cost.
  • Do I need to move everything out?
    • No. Students may leave their belongings in their room but should be sure to take what they need for break and items you consider valuable, sentimental or irreplaceable. Please understand the University is not responsible for any items left in a student’s room.
  • Why is the University going remote in November and closing the buildings between December 15 and January 17?
    • In the effort to reduce the possibility of increased exposure to viruses during the winter period, the University has chosen to go remote after Thanksgiving. By going virtual for the remainder of the semester we will limit the density of people on campus who might contract and spread COVID or other viruses prevalent at this time of year.
  • What are the reasons that would allow me to remain on campus?
    • Students for whom Montclair State University is their permanent home, students who do not have access to the resources to complete their course work successfully, and/or students whose home is not a safe place, may apply to stay for break housing.
  • Can I stay in my current assignment?
    • In most cases yes, however, the department reserves the right to move students to other winter spaces if needed.
  • I am graduating in the fall or have been released from housing for the spring can I stay for break housing?
    • No, students that are graduating or have been released from their agreement will need to leave by the end of the semester, which is December 14.
  • What food options will be available?
    • A student’s fall semester meal plan will cover November 29 through December 14. There is no cost for meals during this time frame as long as a student is approved to remain in housing and has a current meal plan. There will be no meal plan available from December 15 through January 17, 2021.
