Are you a high school or potential transfer student interested in learning more about one of the most exciting communication and media programs in the country? Then join us on Sunday, September 19, 2021, as we host our Virtual Open House. The School of Communication and Media (SCM) offers a variety of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with all undergraduates sharing a core curriculum focusing on communication and media disciplines. Through various one hour Zoom sessions, you will be able to hear from our faculty and current Red Hawks about all the unique opportunities available:

  • Communication and Media Studies: Dr. Hugh Curnutt
  • Advertising / Social Media and Public Relations: Dr. Yi Luo and Dr. Bond Benton
  • Journalism and Digital Media / Sports Communication: Professor Kelly Whiteside
  • Film and Television / Filmmaking BFA: Professors Guy Nicolucci, Karl Nussbaum, and Stuart Maclelland

In addition, whether it’s at the school’s newspaper, radio station, multi-platform digital outlet or the newly-launched sports network, students can create and share digital content, manage social media platforms, and use monitoring and listening tools.  At the school’s student-led, strategic communications agency, there are opportunities to create and execute PR and social media campaigns for Montclair State University business units as well as area businesses and nonprofits.

Under the direction of enthusiastic faculty with decades of classroom, agency, brand and media production experience, each entity mirrors a professional setting and is equivalent to an internship.  Further separating SCM from other programs is an orchestrated effort called the Coordination Desk, which each week brings together students from the radio station (WSMC), newspaper (The Montclarion), news station (News Lab), sports network (Red Hawk Sports Network) and agency (Hawk Communications) to share best practices, story ideas and key learnings.

“These resources, along with our talented and experienced faculty, make the School of Communication and Media one of the top choices for students looking to launch their careers in our rapidly evolving, digitally-focused world,” said Dr. Keith Strudler, Director of the School of Communication and Media.
