Montclair State University (MSU) is required to furnish a 1098-T to all students that incurred qualified tuition and related expenses during the current tax year. The 1098-T is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form provided to students who enroll in classes at MSU with a valid social security number on file. It is used to assist students and families in determining if they are eligible to claim the Hope Scholarship or Lifetime Learning Tax Credit. MSU is required to produce the 1098-T by IRS regulations for those students with a valid social security number.
The 1098-T is provided each year on or before January 31st.
The data reported on the 1098-T is based on the tax year (January – December), not the academic year. Your 1098-T statement will reflect tuition & fees charges (Box 2), scholarships, and grants (Box 5) based on the date the classes will begin. For example, spring 2017 term begins in January of 2017 so the charges will be reported on the 2017 1098T. Payment information is not included on a 1098T. Only qualified tuition and fees (not including room and board) are reported.
Students are fully responsible for keeping the University’s Registrar’s Office informed of correct name, social security number and address for tax reporting purposes. Any updates must be made on or before January 31, 2018.
The tax year follows the calendar year (January-December). This includes Spring 2017; Summer 2017, Fall 2017 and winter 2018. Spring 2018 qualified tuition and fees will be on tax 1098T document for fiscal year 2018.
1098-T and Social Security Numbers: Per state, federal and IRS guidelines, Montclair State University will request that all students provide their Social Security Number (SSN) for reporting purposes. Having an accurate SSN on tax forms supports the tax deduction that a student or family may claim for qualified educational expenses on both federal and state income tax returns. Failure to provide Montclair State University with an SSN may result in being fined by the IRS in accordance with Internal Revenue Code Section 6723.
More information regarding credits and deductions is available at the IRS website or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676). IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education and IRS Form 8863, Education Credits are particularly helpful.
