Federal Scholarships are funded by the United States Department of State. These are generally very generous and competitive scholarships. Read the eligibility criteria and deadlines carefully.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Scholarships for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.
Up to $5,000. Must be a federal Pell Grant recipient.
Requirements of the scholarship include:
- Be a citizen of the United States;
- Be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions);
- Be receiving a federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship;
- Be in the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program of at least three weeks for students from four-year institutions, in a single country and eligible for credit from the student’s home institution. Boren Awards Scholarship
For U.S. students to study in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East. Focus on national security interest. Up to $20,000 for an academic year’s study abroad
Freeman – Asia
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
