Dedicated to a holistic approach to the craft of acting, the program will give you experience all in areas of the theatre as part of your training including Text Analysis, Theatre History I and II, Directing, Introduction to Technical Theatre and Practicums in Stage Craft, Costumes and Production Operations.<\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><p>An ever-expanding menu of electives are available including: Acting for the Camera I &amp; II, Singing for the Actor, Playwriting I &amp; II, Directing I &amp; II, The Business of the Business, Audition Prep, Stage Combat, Stage Dialects, Devised Theatre Projects etc\u2026<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Acting<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Year One:<\/strong> Students learn how to work<strong> intimately and collaboratively with an ensemble<\/strong>, actor-to-actor and moment-to-moment with bravery, vulnerability and <strong>an honest use of self<\/strong> through technique that progresses into contemporary scene work with an emphasis on diverse playwrights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year Two:<\/strong>\u00a0Fall semester is devoted to\u00a0<strong>Stanislavski technique<\/strong>\u00a0through intense scene study with characters from diverse contemporary playwrights. Spring semester focuses on\u00a0<strong>Practical Aesthetics<\/strong>\u00a0and advanced scene work with complex characters from diverse contemporary Greek and contemporary-modern playwrights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year three:<\/strong> Centers on the specific challenges and demands of plays by <strong>William Shakespeare<\/strong>, including heightened language and given circumstances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year Four:<\/strong> The senior year of training in our program transitions students from an academic setting to the profession and culminates in a <strong>Senior Capstone Project<\/strong> fall semester and a <strong>Senior Showcase in New York City<\/strong> in the spring semester.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Movement<\/h3>\n<p>The Movement for Actor sequence is offered for six consecutive semesters and includes ensemble based<strong>\u00a0Viewpoints Training<\/strong><span style=\"color: #727580\">,\u00a0<\/span><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">Yoga and Pilates<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #727580\">\u00a0to diagnose and release habitual tensions in the body through rigorous classes for flexibility, core strength, and presence,\u00a0<\/span><strong>Andrei Droznin Movement<\/strong><span style=\"color: #727580\">\u00a0for advanced work on flexibility, strength with partner stretches, weight sharing and acrobatics, a year of\u00a0<\/span><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">Mask and Clown\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #727580\">work, and an entire year devoted to\u00a0<\/span><strong>Suzuki Training.\u00a0<\/strong>Our movement training is sophisticated, rigorous and transformational and one of the many strengths of the program.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Voice and Speech<\/h3>\n<p>The Voice and Speech for the Actor sequence is a six-semester sequence that focuses on release and freedom: discovering and engaging\u00a0in authentic, organic presence, finding active breath and working with an open channel for vocal expression with\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #000000\">MVM: Miller Voice Method.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Students also\u00a0learn IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) as a basis for acquiring the necessary skills for Standard American speech and dialects.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Academic Theatre Courses and Hands-on Experience<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>The BFA Acting Program is as <strong>academically rigorous<\/strong> as it is artistic with a strong intellectual component. All members of the acting program take coursework in script analysis, theatre history and directing. Students are required to learn about all aspects of the theatre and engage in a <strong>four-course progression of technical classes<\/strong> (practicums) which provides them with hands-on experience working behind the scenes on three department productions in stagecraft, costumes and operations. Students have numerous opportunities to participate in <strong>film work<\/strong> through collaboration with the School of Communication and Media\u2019s filmmaking majors. Visit our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/theatre-and-dance\/productions-and-events\/\">Productions<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/theatre-and-dance\/student-work-gallery\/\">Photo Gallery<\/a> links to see examples of current and past student work.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Production Season<\/strong>: Department of Theatre and Dance&#8217;s produces full seasons of contemporary and classical plays and musicals in our multi-dimensional performances spaces in the Alexander Kasser Theater, 900 seat Memorial Auditorium, 125 seat Dance Theatre, the 100 seat flexible black box, the Howard Fox Theatre, and an outdoor amphitheatre.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Studio Series<\/strong>: Features workshops of plays and staged readings directed by faculty and guest directors as an extension of the production season. Ari Laura Kreith). She can be seen in the new short <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pizza Party<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (directed by Tessa Slovis, currently making rounds at festivals across the country) and the upcoming feature <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One Week in Heaven<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> directed by Joseph Craig.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div>She recently worked with Kreith and Bader again in Bader\u2019s virtual play, <em>My First Time<\/em> which also starred Alysia Reiner, Isabel Keating, Pauline Chalamet, Jevonnah Mayo, &amp; Karen Eilbacher.<\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/theatre-and-dance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2017\/10\/Allegra_top-7-Version-2-200x187.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/theatre-and-dance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2017\/10\/Allegra_top-7-Version-2-200x187.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Allegra Cohen\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">Producer and Actress <strong>Allegra Cohen &#8217;02<\/strong> is maximizing her experience from both sides of the camera to create <em>All In One<\/em>, a lifestyle brand which forges successful partnerships in business and the arts. Allegra graduated with top awards in Theater and was the commencement speaker for her graduating class. She co-produced <em>Split the Difference,<\/em> which won Best Comedy at the New York Television Festival and was later bought by NBC. She followed up with <em>The<\/em> <em>Crawl<\/em>, which evolved into Spike TV&#8217;s <em>Weekend Pre-Game<\/em>. <\/div><\/div>Her production <em>Putzel <\/em>won Best Picture at the 2013 Phoenix Film Festival and was released worldwide by Filmbuff. Allegra worked product placement into the feature film, <em>I<\/em> <em>Am<\/em> <em>Michael<\/em>, starring James Franco, Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts, and premiered at Sundance Film Festival and at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2015.\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/theatre-and-dance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2017\/10\/Carlos-Headshot-200x230.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/theatre-and-dance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2017\/10\/Carlos-Headshot-200x230.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Carlos Gonzalez\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<p><strong>Carlos Gonzalez<\/strong> was born and raised in Cuba. Carlos graduated from Montclair State University Class &#8217;11 with a BFA in Acting and Minor in Dance. Touring credits include: <em>In The Heights<\/em> (national tour), <em>Zorro The Musical<\/em> (Asia tour) and the off-Broadway sensation <em>FUERZA BRUTA<\/em> and various regional productions. Also performed for Telemundo, Norwegian Cruise Lines, PBS and more. Carlos returned to Cuba as part of the creative team in the first two professional musicals produced there in 50 years, <em>Carmen Jones El Amor Cubano<\/em> and <em>RENT<\/em>. <\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div>He made his Broadway debut with <em>On Your Feet<\/em> at the Marquis Theater and performed with the cast on GMA, The View, Macys Day Parade and alongside Gloria Estefan in concert. The love and support of his family and friends are what inspires him to approach every day with a smile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/theatre-and-dance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2017\/10\/alum-BFA-jan25.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/theatre-and-dance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2017\/10\/alum-BFA-jan25.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Dustin Fontaine\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<p><strong>Dustin Fontaine<\/strong> is a Montclair alumnus (class of 2011) and recipient of the Marc Mattaliano Theatre Award for excellence in performance. He has since performed in plays, workshops and readings everywhere from The Actors Studio and Premiere Stages to Harlem rooftops and Brooklyn garages where he has collaborated with directors like McG, Wes Grantom and Rachel Chavkin. <\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div>His current escapades bring him to Las Vegas where he performs as a Blue Man in the internationally renowned Blue Man Group. With a formal background in theatre, Cameron earned his BFA in acting from Montclair State University.
