It took that long for her night terrors to subside, said Steve McCarthy, who, along with Susan Kerner, is racing to finish the film with the help of the 93-year-old Schloss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we met her she told us two things: Get it done, and hurry,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>After being discovered by the Nazis in an Amsterdam hideaway during World War II, Schloss (then Geiringer) and her parents and brother Heinz were sent to Auschwitz\/Birkenau; only she and her mother survived.<\/p>\n<p>But on the train to the camps, Heinz made his sister promise that if he didn\u2019t come back, she would retrieve the trove of paintings and poems he\u2019d hidden under the floorboards of his Amsterdam hideaway.<\/p>\n<p>After Schloss and her mother were liberated by the Russians, she returned to Amsterdam and discovered her brother\u2019s artwork and poetry, now on display in an Amsterdam museum.<\/p>\n<span class=\"prpl-button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/essex\/montclair\/2022\/12\/28\/montclair-professors-film-on-holocaust-survivor-fulfills-evas-promise\/69752703007\/\">Read the full story at NorthJersey.com<\/a><\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steve McCarthy\u00a0(Communication and Media) and Professor Emerita\u00a0Susan Kerner\u00a0(Theatre and Dance)\u00a0are featured in this NorthJersey.com profile\u00a0about their documentary,\u00a0Eva\u2019s Promise, which follows\u00a0Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss\u2019 efforts\u00a0to share her 17-year-old brother Heinz Geiringer\u2019s hidden artwork after he died in a concentration camp.
