Professor Angela Bourke, a distinguished scholar of Irish culture and the Irish language, will speak on “Verbal Art and Private Lives in Irish Women’s Writing.” Her book The Burning of Bridget Cleary (1999), about an Irish woman burned alive by her husband and other male relatives in 1895, was awarded the Irish Times Prize for non-fiction. A former professor of Modern Irish (language) at University College Dublin, Bourke is also the author of the biography Maeve Brennan: Homesick at The New Yorker, a short story collection By Salt Water, and many essays on Irish cultural and linguistic subjects. The books about Bridget Cleary and Maeve Brennan are available in inexpensive used paperback editions on line.
