Profile

Dr. Esmilda Abreu received her master's degree in Psychology, her doctorate in Organization and Management, and focuses her research on leadership, corporate culture, and mentoring. Dr. Abreu has studied meditation and mindfulness and has had a personal mindfulness practice for more than 38 years. She is a contemplative scholar and mentor with the Research Academy for University Learning at Montclair State and appointed Made in NYC - Faculty Fellow. Dr. Abreu received the Governor Whitman’s Pride Award for working with diverse populations, developed the first hospital credentialing program for complementary medicine in the country, served as Co-Chair of the Mentoring Committee on the Presidential Commission of Affirmative Action and Diversity at Montclair State University, and established Bias Education Response Team at Pratt Institute. She teaches at Montclair State University as core faculty in the MBA program of the School of Business. My research interests are talent development via mentorship, leadership, and organizational culture. I have a passion for sub-cultures and affinity groups that may arise in a corporate environment. I love to infuse contemplative practices into pedagogy. I teach in the MBA program under the School of Business and for the Women and Gender Studies program.

My connection to Montclair is a long one. As former Director of Equity and Diversity at Montclair State, I oversaw the Women's Center, the Center for Faith and Spirituality, and Diversity and Inclusion Programs. I served our Campus Ministries and our student spiritual, cultural, and religious groups as Chair of the Council for Faith and Spirituality. My commitment to equity was evidenced in my position as Co-Chair of the Mentoring Committee for the President's Commission on Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity and Diversity.

Dr. Abreu is the President of the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking, serves on ART Pride’s Alliance for Arts and Health New Jersey Steering Committee, and is a founding member of North Jersey GLSEN. She works with Hospital Administrators on the Atlantic Health Systems’ Art and Health Advisory Committee and served as a Board of Trustee Member of the Mental Health Clinic of Passaic. She established the Women’s Leadership Committee for the North Jersey Regional Chamber of Commerce and served as Co-President of the New Jersey Consortium of Women and Gender Studies. Dr. Abreu has trained a wide variety of not-for-profit organizations including the Linda and Rudy Slucker Center, ACE-Network, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Athena Collaborative Group, American Conference of Diversity, and Latino Psychological Association. Formerly, Dr. Abreu served as Director of Equity and Diversity at Montclair State University, Executive Director of Women’s Rights Information Center, and she is now Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Pratt Institute.
