Profile

Captain Kristin DeWitt is a dedicated law enforcement professional with nearly two decades of experience in campus public safety, leadership, and officer development. She has proudly served with the Montclair State University Police Department since 2006, progressing through the ranks of Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, and now Patrol Captain, where she leads the Patrol Division. In her current role, she oversees daily patrol operations, supervises personnel, and ensures the department remains prepared to meet the evolving needs of a large university community.

Captain DeWitt is also responsible for managing the department’s Field Training Officer (FTO) Program, overseeing the training and development of newly hired officers. Through this responsibility, she helps ensure new personnel receive the guidance, structure, and practical experience necessary to become capable, confident, and community-oriented police officers.

In addition to her command responsibilities, Captain DeWitt serves as a Resiliency Police Officer, focusing on officer wellness, peer support, stress management, and building resiliency among department personnel. She strongly believes that supporting officer wellness is essential to maintaining an effective and professional organization.

Prior to her law enforcement career, Captain DeWitt was a Division II softball athlete at Bloomfield College, where she developed the teamwork, discipline, and competitive drive that continue to shape her leadership style today.

Captain DeWitt is recognized for her commitment to mentorship, accountability, operational readiness, and fostering positive relationships throughout the university community. She remains focused on strengthening her department, developing future leaders, and advancing professional, service-oriented policing.
