Profile

Maxine Steinman a performer and choreographer, has presented her choreography in numerous festivals and venues such as Joyce Soho, The 92ndStreet Y Harkness Dance Festival, the Westfest Dance Festival, the American Dance Guild Festival, DUMBO, the Battery Dance Festival, The Outlet Dance Project Festival, Making Moves Festival, Liberty Dance Festival as well as others. She has traveled to Taiwan, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Lebanon and Cyprus to teach, choreograph, and perform her work. Jack Anderson and Jennifer Dunning of the New York Times have called her choreography “ingenious’’ and a “jewel” and twice she was awarded grants from the O'Donnell-Green Foundation for Music and Dance. She has had residencies at The Church in Mt. Vision, NY and in Costa Rica at Casa Uno. Maxine has been commissioned to create works and has taught for Montclair State University, Hofstra University, Marymount Manhattan College, the Ailey School, Institut del Teatre, Centro Andaluz de Danza, University of Colima, and for dance companies in Brazil and NY. Her work has been reviewed by critics from the New York Times, Attitude, The Dancers’ Magazine, and online by OFF OFF OFF Dance, criticaldance.com, and the Huffington Post. The Manhattan Neighborhood Network and the Brooklyn Heights Press have interviewed her and over the course of her dance career, she has produced 13 full evening programs, both in the US and abroad. Maxine was a soloist with the Eleo Pomare Dance Company for 12 years and has also performed with Denishawn Repertory Dancers, Mafata Dance Company, Robin Becker, Regina Larkin, Sue Bernhard, Spiritdance, Danceimprints, among others. She has had her own company Maxine Steinman & Dancers for over 30 years and holds a BFA in dance (Adelphi University), an MA in Dance and Dance Education (Teachers College Columbia University), and an MFA in Dance/Performance (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts). She has been teaching the José Limón style and setting group sections of his work for many years. Maxine performed with the José Limón Dance Company in the LINKs program and most recently for the 80th Anniversary intergenerational performance of Chaconne at the Joyce Theater. Maxine is an Associate Professor of Dance and Program Coordinator of the BFA Dance Division at Montclair State University.

Specialization

My expertise is in the Jose Limon technique, choreography, directing the Fall Dance Concert, mentoring students, and teaching a class called Creative Collaborations where students work with animators, poets and composers. I am a performing artist and dance educator and I enjoy sharing my expertise with students in the program.
