Profile
Kelly Whiteside brings her experience as a sports journalist into the classroom, focusing on critical issues in sport and their impact on society. At Montclair State, she helped launch the Sports Communication major and the Red Hawk Sports Network.
With Professor Tom Franklin and a team of students, Whiteside produced "The Pride of Paterson: An Oral History of Hinchliffe Stadium.” The goal of the project was to capture and preserve the rich tapestry of stories surrounding Paterson’s Hinchliffe Stadium, one of America’s last remaining Negro League ballparks. The project can be viewed as an interactive exhibit at the Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium and on their website.
At USA Today, she was the lead Olympics writer, World Cup soccer writer and the national college football writer. Prior to USA Today, she was a reporter at Newsday and a staff writer at Sports Illustrated. Her work has also been extensively published in the New York Times. Whiteside recently completed a three-year term on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. She was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a sports writer, becoming the first woman in the history of the Football Writers Association of America to receive the honor. She won two Sports Emmys for her work on the 2024 Paris Olympics with NBC Sports. Whiteside is also the author or co-author of three books.
