Program Overview

The Dance Major with a Studio Teaching concentration teaches students the financial and marketing aspects of running a dance studio in conjunction with their coursework in dance and education. The program is based in the Department of Theatre & Dance. Find out more about the BA in Dance. Curriculum Requirements:

All university students must complete a set of General Education Requirements applicable to their specific degree. Dance Education majors must, in addition complete the major course requirements listed below:

Course Descriptions:

ACCT204: Fundamentals of Accounting (3 hours lecture)

This course provides a foundation for non-accounting business majors. Topics covered include both financial and managerial accounting from a user perspective. Students will be exposed to the four financial statements and ethical issues in accounting along with other accounting reporting issues in the financial accounting phase of the course. Managerial accounting focuses on generating accounting data for internal business decision-making in today's increasingly competitive and complex business world. Students need to become familiar with the use of accounting data for both investment and credit decisions as well as strategic decision making for firms' operation. Major topics covered include financial statement analysis, budgeting, accounting-based decision making, and performance evaluation. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: ENWR 105 or HONP 100; Not open to BS Accounting Majors.

DNCE130: Dance Science (1 hour lab, 2 hours lecture)

This course seeks to provide the dance student an educational experience where anatomical and kinesiological concepts are taught in the context of dance performance and injury prevention. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: For Dance (DANC), Dance Education Studio Teaching (DAST), Dance Education P-12 Teacher Certification (DAED) students only.

DNCE150: Production Elements-Dance (4 hours lecture)

Introduction to technical productions related to dance. Survey of terminology, application of production principles, and aesthetic potential for production. 2 sh.

DNCE161: Choreography I (3 hours lecture, 1 hour studio)

Elements and methods of dance composition. 2 sh.

Prerequisites: DNCE 265.

DNCE205: Rhythmic Analysis (3 hours lecture)

All basic rhythmic structures (basic note values, meter, etc.) covered and immediately applied to movement; games, notational assignments, and choreographic studies used to create understanding of the inherent rhythm within all basic dance movement. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors only.

DNCE235: Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals (3 hours lecture)

Introduces principles and practical applications of Laban Movement Analysis and the Bartenieff Fundamentals. Presents LMA as a comprehensive system of analyzing, observing and notating human movement. Bartenieff Fundamentals, a body therapy used to increase body and movement efficiency with greater ease, explores the functional anatomy of body organization and patterning in human movement. Course includes both theory and practical application. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors only.

DNCE241: Dance Technique: Modern II (2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio)

Further study and application of basic movement vocabulary, alignment, complex movement patterns, style and performance. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors or minors only.

DNCE245: World Dance (4 hours lab)

The distinctive techniques customarily related to specific non-western cultures. The groups studied will vary from semester to semester. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve (12) credits. Meets the World Culture Requirement. If taken more than once, must be with a different cultural content. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Non-Western Cultural Perspectives. 3 sh.

DNCE255: Dance Technique: Ballet II

Further study of beginning ballet with emphasis on structural alignment, barre work and center floor exercises. DNCE majors: 3 credits. THMT majors: 2-3 credits. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 2 - 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance and Musical Theatre majors and minors only.

DNCE261: Choreography II (3 hours lecture, 1 hour studio)

Dance choreography with emphasis on small group works and solos, including form and structure. 2 sh.

Prerequisites: DNCE 161.

DNCE265: Dance Improvisation (3 hours lecture, 1 hour studio)

Basic skills and problems in dance improvisation. 2 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors or minors only.

DNCE317: Dance History: 1661-Present (3 hours lecture)

In this course, we will undertake the study of dance in its historical context, with reference to the development of ballet, modern dance, post-modernism, contemporary trends and musical theatre. We will focus on the development of Western Theatrical concert dance (ballet, modern, jazz) with a nod to the evolution of social dance in this country as it influenced and affected the concert dance. Dance history is not independent of "History" History so we will look at what was going on in the world at various times that influenced dance as we know it. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: DNCE 241 or DNCE 255.

DNCE325: Dance Methods (3 hours lecture)

Approaches, problems, resources and techniques for teaching and developing dance programs geared to grades 7-12 and various adult levels. Includes curriculum, unit and lesson planning as well as practical application of methodology. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors only.

DNCE341: Dance Technique: Modern III (2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio)

Further study and application of basic movement vocabulary, complex movement patterns, style and performance. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors and minors only and DNCE 141 and DNCE 241; or audition.

DNCE355: Dance Technique: Ballet III (2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio)

Advanced technique in ballet with emphasis on individualized placement. Work on musicality, line, dynamics and stylistic refinement. DNCE majors: 3 credits. THMT majors: 2-3 credits. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 2 - 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Musical Theatre Majors/Minors, Dance majors and minors only, DNCE 255, or by audition.

DNCE361: Choreography III (3 hours lecture, 1 hour studio)

Exploring and applying performance concepts and techniques used in choreographing for groups of varying sizes. 2 sh.

Prerequisites: DNCE 261.

DNCE401: Dance for Children (1 hour lecture, 2 hours studio)

This course will explore all aspects of teaching dance to children (K-6) in the public school system and in the private sector. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: DNCE 161, DNCE 205, DNCE 235, DNCE 265, two semesters of ballet (DNCE 255, DNCE 355, DNCE 455) and two semesters of modern (DNCE 241, DNCE 341, DNCE 441).

DNCE441: Dance Technique: Modern IV (2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio)

Continuation of DNCE 341. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors and minors only and DNCE 141 and DNCE 241 and DNCE 341; or audition.

DNCE455: Dance Technique: Ballet IV (2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio)

Advanced ballet technique with emphasis on individualized placement. Continuation of work with intricate, technically difficult sequences. Continuation of emphasis on musicality, line, dynamics, and stylistic refinement. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors and minors only and DNCE 155 and DNCE 255 and DNCE 355; or audition.

DNCE485: Dance Repertory (1 hour lecture, 3 hours studio)

Dancing, choreographing, or providing technical assistance for the MSU Repertory Dance Company. Must be taken every semester. 0.5 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors and minors only and audition.

DNCE490: Co-op Education: Dance Work Experience

Upper class undergraduate students may pursue a portion of a semester's work under the supervision of an experienced professional practitioner as an assistant in active, successful dance activity. An MSU faculty member will evaluate student progress, assess learning, and award credit. 3 - 4 sh.

Prerequisites: Dance majors and minors only and senior standing and departmental approval.

EDFD200: Psychological Foundations of Education (3 hours lecture)

The psychological foundations of education enable students to understand and apply essential topics in teaching and learning including development, motivation, diversity and assessment. Through relating theoretical frameworks to empirical research and applying them to classroom settings, students will be better able to understand their own experience as learners and conceptualize their future practice as teachers. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Social Science, Social Science. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: ENWR 105 or HONP 100.

EDFD220: Philosophical Orientation to Education (3 hours lecture)

Western philosophical heritage as related to the issues and responsibilities of American education. Comparative analysis of past and current ideological movements that influence moral, social, and educational decisions of parents, political leaders, and professional educators. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Humanities, Philosophy or Religion. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: ENWR 105 or HONP 100.

EDFD221: Historical Foundations of American Education (3 hours lecture)

This course offers students the crucial sequence of ideas that constitute one of the central themes in American society and culture. Since its beginnings, American thinkers have seen education as the key to an informed citizenry. Major themes in American education will be looked at through the reading of primary and secondary sources. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Social Science, American or European History. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: ENWR 105 or HONP 100.

INFO301: Business Decision Making (3 hours lecture)

The underlying theme of the course is business problem solving. This course engages students in employing tools from operations management and management information systems in the solution of business problems. Analysis of quantitative decision-making and information systems from the management point of view will be covered. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: INFO 173 or CMPT 109; and MATH 106 or 109 or 114 or 116 or 122 or 221; or departmental approval. For Business minors only.

MATH106: Contemporary Applied Math for Everyone (3 hours lecture)

The impact of modern mathematics on today's society in terms of management decision making, scheduling and planning, social choice, including voting and apportionment, population studies, and measurements of size and shape. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Mathematics. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: MATH 051 or MATH 061 or MATH 071 or placement through the Montclair State University Placement Test (MSUPT).

MATH109: Statistics (3 hours lecture)

Introduction to the use of statistics in the real world. Topics include: analysis and presentation of data, variability and uncertainty in data, techniques of statistical inference and decision-making. Computer assisted including lecture, individual and small group tutoring in Mathematics Computer Laboratory. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Mathematics. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: MATH 051 or MATH 061 or MATH 071 or placement through the Montclair State University Placement Test (MSUPT). Not for majors in Mathematics (MATH), Mathematics with Applied Math concentration (MAAM) or Mathematics-Teacher Education (MTED).

MGMT231: Management Processes (3 hours lecture)

To provide undergraduate students a review of classical and modern approaches to the managerial process as it relates to the manager's functions of planning, organizing, communication, motivation, leading, controlling, and managing change. Emphasizing new forces in the managerial environment such as workplace diversity and economic globalization, these reviews will be tied to the open-system model and the contingency approach as overall frameworks for understanding organizations and management. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: ENWR 105 or HONP 100.

MKTG240: Introduction to Marketing (3 hours lecture)

This introductory course is designed to expose the student to the basic areas that comprise marketing as a discipline. Marketing is viewed as a process that must be integrated with all other business functions. The basic theories, concepts, language and tools of marketing are introduced, and illustrations of their applicability to the business as well as non-profit sectors of the national economy with increasing stress on the global realities which affect the marketing function are addressed. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: ENWR 105 or HONP 100.

PSYC200: Educational Psychology (3 hours lecture)

Required for teaching. Covers child and adolescent development; fundamentals of learning theory as applied to classroom situations, learning inhibition and academic non-achievement, personal-social adjustment, measuring and evaluating teaching-learning, creativity. Course may not be taken by Psychology majors for major credit effective Fall 1995. 3 sh.
