The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Musical Theatre provides rigorous training with a concentrated focus in acting, dance and music, preparing students to work in the musical theatre industry. Musical Theatre majors develop exceptional performance skills through a combination of intense classroom work and production opportunities.

DNCE121: Musical Theatre Dance I (2.5 hours studio)
A dance studio focusing on jazz and tap technique with strong emphasis on style, terminology and skill preparation for musical theatre performance. 2 sh.
DNCE155: Dance Technique: Ballet I (3 hours lecture)
Study of basic ballet terminology, barre work, center floor exercises. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve credits. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Fine and Performing Arts. 3 sh.
DNCE221: Musical Theatre Dance II (2.5 hours studio)
An intermediate/advanced dance studio, focusing on dance styles found within the musical theatre repertoire with a strong emphasis on thorough, efficient and elevated technical proficiency associated with original Broadway choreography. 2 sh.
Prerequisites: DNCE 121.
DNCE255: Dance Technique: Ballet II
Further study of beginning ballet with emphasis on structural alignment, barre work and center floor exercises. DNCE majors: 3 credits. THMT majors: 2-3 credits. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 2 - 3 sh.
Prerequisites: Dance and Musical Theatre majors and minors only.
DNCE321: Musical Theatre Dance III (2.5 hour studio)
An advanced level performance studio focusing on dance styles found within the musical theatre repertoire. With strong emphasis on thorough, efficient and elevated technical proficiency and heightened musicianship skills associated with Broadway style musical sequences. 2 sh.
Prerequisites: DNCE 121, DNCE 221 or permission from instructor.
DNCE355: Dance Technique: Ballet III (2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio)
Advanced technique in ballet with emphasis on individualized placement. Work on musicality, line, dynamics and stylistic refinement. DNCE majors: 3 credits. THMT majors: 2-3 credits. May be repeated for a maximum of twenty-four credits. 2 - 3 sh.
Prerequisites: Musical Theatre Majors/Minors, Dance majors and minors only, DNCE 255, or by audition.
MSSN101: Keyboard Musicianship I (2 hours studio)
Keyboard skills including major and minor scales, arpeggios and chord progressions, sightreading, transposition, harmonization, improvisation. Group instruction. 1 sh.
Prerequisites: Music (MUSC) and Musical Theatre (MUTR) majors only.
MSSN102: Keyboard Musicianship II (2 hours studio)
Continuation of MSSN 101. Group instruction. 1 sh.

MTTH131: Freshman Studio I
A rehearsal and performance laboratory, focusing on musical theatre material with an emphasis on thorough and efficeint preparation as the student develops movement and musicianship skills and ensemble performance technique. 1 sh.
MTTH132: Acting for the Singer I (2 hours lecture)
Acting for the singer is a music performance course focused on the issues of acting in musical/dramatic works. Students will learn an analytical process for the construction and performance of a dramatically viable character within a musical/dramatic work, and apply this process to the preparation of 3-4 songs/arias/duets during the course of each semester. 0.5 - 2 sh.
Prerequisites: MUCP 101 or equivalent. Music and Musical Theatre majors only. Departmental approval.
MTTH133: Vocal Technique for Musical Theatre (2 hours lecture)
Vocal technique class for first year Musical Theatre majors. Study of basic anatomy and function of the voice. Study of singing through vocal exercises and healthy and optimal production including breath management, resonance, projection, and good lyric diction. 2 sh.
MTTH231: Acting for the Singer II (2 hours lecture)
Acting for the Singer II is a continuation of Acting for the Singer I, a musical performance course focused on the issues of acting in musical/dramatic works. Students will continue to practice an analytical process for the construction and performance of a dramatically viable character within a musical/dramatic work, and apply this process to the preparation of 4-5 songs/arias/duets during the course of each semester. 2 sh.
Prerequisites: MTTH 132.
MTTH331: Musical Theatre Repertoire and Audition Technique (3 hours laboratory)
A lab intensive focusing on advanced song interpretation, musical theatre audition technique for singing actors, and the development of an individual and extensive song portfolio concurrent with industry standards and expectations. 1 sh.
Prerequisites: MTTH 231.

MUCP103: Aural Skills I (3 hours lecture)
Sight reading and dictation in major and minor modes, using diatonic chord progressions. Basic solfeggio. Must be taken with MUCP 101. 1 sh.

MUCP104: Aural Skills II
Continuation of MUCP 103; must be taken with MUCP 102. 1 sh.

MUGN136: The History of Broadway (3 hours lecture)
Introduction to the varieties of style in music for the purpose of extending dramatic action, characterization and atmosphere in musicals, operettas and musical comedies. MUPR140: Performance Practicum for Performance Majors
Performance of repertoire for coaching in interpretation, style, analysis, technique, etc. Required in conjunction with each course in the primary and major instrument. Previous course MUPR 040 effective through Spring 2014. 0.5 sh.
Prerequisites: Music Performance (MUPR), Music w/concentration:Jazz Studies (MUJZ) and Musical Theatre (MUTR) majors only.
THTR115: Acting I - B.F.A.: Theatre Games/Improvisation I (1 hour lecture, 3 hours studio)
Work on the actor's instrument; use of the senses, involvement with the environment and other actors; concentration, honesty, and work with freeing the body, voice and imagination. Improvisation is the primary tool used for developing the actor's instrument and shaping material. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: B.F.A. in Theatre, Acting concentration only.
THTR130: Acting II - B.F.A.: Theatre Games/Improvisation II (1 hour lecture, 3 hours studio)
A continuation of Acting I with more advanced work on the actor's instrument. Improvisation and theatre games used in developing a workshop for public presentation. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 115; B.F.A. in Theatre, Acting Concentration majors only.
THTR139: Stage Make-Up (1 hour lecture, 2 hours studio)
Appreciation of make-up through symbolic aspects and historic differences with regard to theatrical productions. Make-up materials and their uses; creating corrective and character make-up, mustaches and beards for a research or creative experience to compile a practical resource file. Previous course THTR 278 effective through Spring 2014. 1 - 3 sh.
THTR150: Introduction to Technical Theatre (0.5 hours lecture, 2 hours lab)
An introductory course in technical theatre including scenic construction, lighting and sound technology and costume construction. Students will gain practical experience in various theatre production shops. 1 sh.
THTR200: Introduction to Technical Theatre (2 hours lab)
The application of principles learned in THTR 150 (Stagecraft) to the building and mounting of Theatre Series productions. Taken concurrently with THTR 150. 1 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 150.
THTR201: Production Operations
The application of principles involving lighting, sound and props to the creation and mounting of non-scenic elements and/or the running crew for Theatre Series productions. May be repeated seven times for a maximum of 8.0 credits. 1 sh.

THTR202: Production Costumes
The application of costuming principles and techniques to the building of costumes, mounting Theatre Series productions and/or costume running crew for Theatre Series productions. May be repeated seven times for a maximum of 8.0 credits. 1 sh.

THTR204: Performance Production I (1 hour lecture, 2 hours lab)
Rehearsal, performance and strike for the first Theatre Series production in a given semester. May be repeated twice for a total of 3.0 credits. 1 sh.
THTR206: Performance: Production II (1 hour lecture, 2 hours lab)
Rehearsal, performance and strike for the second Theatre Series in a given semester. May be repeated twice for a total of 3.0 credits. 1 sh.
THTR207: Performance: Production III (1 hour lecture, 2 hours lab)
Rehearsal, performance and strike for the third Theatre Series production in a given semester. May be repeated twice for a total of 3.0 credits. 1 sh.
THTR210: Theatre History: Classical to Elizabethan (3 hours lecture)
The development of the theatre from the Classical Greek through the Elizabethan period. Attention to plays, playwrights, theatre architecture, scenery, costuming, styles of acting and presentations; oral reports, lectures and demonstrations.Meets the University Writing Requirement for majors in Theatre. 3 sh.
THTR222: Acting III - B.F.A.: Scene Study I (1 hour lecture, 3 hours studio)
Introduction to Stanislavskian objectives, obstacles and actions in order to create stage truth and to generate physical and emotional involvement. Students explore psychophysical action to project character choices in nonverbal and scripted scene work. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 130; B.F.A. in Theatre, Acting Concentration majors only.
THTR223: Acting IV - B.F.A.: Scene Study II (1 hour lecture, 3 hours studio)
A continuation of the study of psychophysical action and the use of objectives and actions to investigate and master stage truth. Students explore advanced character work through more challenging scene study. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 222; B.F.A. in Theatre, Acting Concentration majors only.
THTR238: Musical Theatre I (3 hours lecture)
Production styles, techniques and dramatic conventions used in the musical theatre in relation to direction, music, dance and design. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 105 or 115.
THTR315: Advanced Scene Study I for Musical Theatre (4 hours studio)
An advanced acting studio for junior musical theatre students which focus on the theories and techniques of Stanislavsky and include textual analysis, improvisational exercises and scene work as they relate to the written works of Chekhov. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 223 or departmental approval.
THTR316: Advanced Scene Study II for Musical Theatre (4 hours studio)
A classical acting studio for junior musical theatre students which focuses on the theories and techniques of scansion, iambic pentameter and scoring of text as well as textual analysis, improvisational exercises and scene work as they relate to the written works of William Shakespeare. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 315 or departmental approval.
THTR338: Musical Theatre II (3 hours lecture)
This course explores the role of the singing actor, including characterization and performance skills. It examines the functions of music, lyrics, and script, and how they are integrated into one dramatic effort. It addresses the differences in styles between older presentational musicals and newer musical dramas. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: THTR 115 and THTR 130 and THTR 222 and THTR 223; and Musical Theatre majors only.
THTR425: Senior Showcase for Actors (3 hours lecture)
Preparation and performance of showcases for industry representatives to introduce students to the professional theatre. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: Senior level Theatre majors only; and by invitation only.
