Profile
I am a mathematics educator in the department of mathematics.
I teach mathematics and mathematics education courses to prospective and practicing teachers and to our doctoral students.
My publications (some co-authored with students and teachers) focus on classroom description and appear in research and practitioner journals and books. I am particularly interested in how the learning theory of constructivism plays out in classrooms and how students' novel mathematical observations can be nurtured and supported in classroom problem solving.
I enjoy learning about new projects and initiatives that best serve teachers in supporting their students.
• Since 2010, I have been working on transforming courses in our mathematics teacher education programs to online and hybrid settings, while upholding constructivist teaching and learning principles. With my colleagues, we have published articles describing pedagogical approaches that support interactions in online (synchronous) settings.
• From 2018 to 2021, I worked on a project on 3D design and printing in which participating teachers were supported in designing manipulatives for, and sharing manipulatives with, their students.
• Since 2024, I have been working on supporting students who are underprepared for undergraduate mathematics, and contributing to the design of a new course (Approaches to College Mathematics). This course has opened up opportunities to pursue research into alternative assessments and the use of games in supporting students.
