Minor

The Film minor is an interdisciplinary program, designed for students in both the humanities and the fine arts, that allows students to pursue both film studies and filmmaking opportunities.

The English department has established a comprehensive body of courses dedicated to film history and aesthetics. With these rich and varied offerings, you will gain an understanding of the growth and development of the cinema – the 20th century’s most vital art form. The courses also provide a strong grounding in media literacy, to help you adopt an informed and active approach to the rapidly expanding range of mass-produced and artist-made moving images that dominate contemporary culture.

An 18-credit program, the Film minor allows you to pursue both film studies and filmmaking. Film studies courses are offered primarily by the English department, while some national cinema courses, such as French Film and Italian Film, are offered by the French and Spanish/Italian departments. Filmmaking courses, which give hands-on production experience, are available from the School of Communication and Media.

Whether your goal is to enter the film industry or you are looking to deepen your knowledge and appreciation of film, the Film minor is the ideal preparation for your next step! See the curriculum.
