Art Forum Presents: Gregory Coates, painter, installation artist

Gregory Coates is a master of minor artistic intervention that triggers major effects: "The less I do, the more honest I am”. Coates earned his formal training from Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture - Maine and Kunst Akademie Duesseldorf - Germany. Coates has been awarded numerous awards including the Edward Mitchell Bannister Award, Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship, Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, Esther Gottlieb Emergency Grant, New York Artist Fellowship, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship and was also Artist in Residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem NY. He has recently exhibited at Soft Machine Gallery - Allentown PA, Shin-Puh-Kan - Kyoto, Japan. He has had solo exhibitions at N’Namdi Contemporary, Miami, along with solos shows in Japan, Philadelphia, Chicago, Austria, Germany and many more. He has been a visiting artist for summer session at School of the Visual Art New York, NY since 2000. Coates work can be found in many public and private collections including Smithsonian Institute of American Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem NY, and in Japan, Florida, Canada and Germany. He is represented by Magnan Metz Gallery in Chelsea, New York.

Art Forum is a weekly program for undergraduate and graduate students, and the public. The program brings in artists, designers, art historians and art critics from around the world to present their work and ideas in an open forum. It is also a course (ARGS 280, 3 SH). Admission is free.
