Lumet’s 1973 film tells the real life story of Frank Serpico, a rebellious NewYork City police detective who dared to break “the blue line” of silence in order to expose crooked cops. An early example of the director’s soon-signature approach to gritty, on-location filming – and fascination with lonely idealists -- it’s sharply edited by Dede Allen, and features an Oscar-nominated performance by Al Pacino.
