David Marmor BIO:

A San Francisco native, David Marmor studied computer science at Harvard and directing at USC. His award-winning short films have screened at more than 60 festivals worldwide and aired on television on IFC and CBC. Most recently, he created the interactive web pilot A Week in the Life of Milly for Eko and Virgin Produced, and his feature screenplay Invariant is in development at Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures. 1BR is his first feature.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:

1BR emerged from the collision of two ideas. When I moved to Los Angeles, I found myself living in a tiny apartment in a large building. I was crowded in among strangers yet felt completely isolated, swallowed up by a vast, uncaring city. I started to wonder if my neighbors felt as alienated as I did.

At the same time (and probably not by coincidence) I became fascinated with L.A.’s long, sordid history of cults. Something about the city, or the lonely strivers and dreamers it attracts, seems to make it an incubator for Utopian visions that sour into violent nightmares. I delved into the history of groups ranging from the Manson Family to Synanon, equally captivated by the sense of belonging they offered and the trails of horror they left behind.

Sarah’s world, the world of Asilo Del Mar, was born as I walked the breezeways of my sunlit apartment complex, waving hello to neighbors I didn’t know — and wondering what might be hidden behind all those doors…

ALOK MISHRA (PRODUCER):

Alok Mishra worked in film market research for 18 years. He worked in both film and trailer testing and he worked in recruitment, analysis, focus group moderation, and client services. Alok worked for Nielsen NRG, OTX Research, IPSOS, and The Motion Picture Group. Alok’s clients included 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, Walt Disney, Dream Works, Sony, and Warner Brothers. In addition to delivering actionable market research to studio execs Alok also worked very closely with many legendary filmmakers to help them improve their films from an editorial perspective; Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, Milos Forman, Darren Aronofsky, Spike Lee, Ron Howard, Wes Anderson, Michael Bay, Robert Zemeckis, Spike Jonze, Ang Lee, the Coen Brothers, and Richard Linklater to mention a few. Additionally, Alok has worked with many talented prolific producers including Brian Grazer, Jason Blum, Scott Rudin, Neil Moritz, and Jerry Bruckheimer.
