Establishes the cost of on-campus housing when a student’s ADA accommodations require a specific room type.

I. Purpose

Montclair State University is committed to ensuring equitable access to campus housing for students with approved Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) housing-related accommodations. In certain cases, approved accommodations necessitate assignment to a specific room type (e.g., single occupancy) that differs from the student’s original housing arrangement. When such room-type accommodations are required for accessibility, the University recognizes that students should not bear an increased financial burden as a result of their disability-related needs.

II. Applicability

This Policy applies to all Montclair State University students eligible to live on campus with approved ADA housing-related accommodations.

III. Definitions (as applicable)

Approved ADA housing-related accommodation refers to a modification or adjustment to a student’s campus residential space required by the Americans with Disabilities Act that has been approved by the Montclair State University Disability Resource Center (DRC).

IV. Policy

When a student with an approved ADA housing-related accommodation is eligible to live on campus and requires a specific room type (e.g., single occupancy room as opposed to multiple-occupancy room) the student will be charged the price of a traditional double room in Bohn Hall for that academic year, regardless of campus location or the type of room required to satisfy the housing-related accommodation. Bohn Hall offers the most affordable student housing across all campuses of the University. This rate serves as a baseline to ensure consistency, fairness, and transparency in housing charges for students whose accommodations require a different room type.

It is important to note that this rate adjustment applies only to students whose approved ADA accommodations directly impact room type. Students whose accommodations solely permit or require additional items within their assigned residence (e.g., medical equipment or furnishings) are not eligible for this adjustment, as these accommodations do not necessitate a change in housing assignment or associated cost.

V. Procedure (as applicable)

Students seeking to secure housing-related accommodations based on a qualifying ADA disability must adhere to all policies and procedures required by the DRC and/or Residence Life to secure on-campus housing. DRC procedures to request on-campus housing accommodations are as follows:

  1. Submit a formal Application for Services via AIM, the DRC’s online management system.
  2. Coordinate with the student’s current treating licensed medical professional to complete and upload the Housing Accommodation Request Form by the associated deadline listed on the Form. Students can also submit the completed Form via email to: drc@montclair.edu or fax: 973-655-5308.
  3. The DRC will review the completed Form and notify the student of the decision or any additional concerns via email within 5-7 business days (Monday- Friday; excluding holidays and weekends).
