Amanda Baden

Dr. Baden is a Professor in the Counseling/Counselor Education Program at Montclair State University in the Department of Counseling. She is a member of the Doctoral Faculty, served as the Graduate Program Coordinator for the M.A. in Counseling Program from 2017 to 2020 and as the Doctoral Program Director from 2021-2024. Dr. Baden leads the MSU Adoption Research Team, which consists of Dr. Baden along with advanced masters and doctoral students in Counselor Education. Dr. Baden is on numerous committees within the Department and the College for Community Health. She is an avid proponent of multicultural competence and specializes in adoption-related research in counseling and psychology. Dr. Baden earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Michigan State University. She is licensed as a psychologist with a small practice in New York City.


I specialize in research related to the post-adoption experiences of adoptees and their families. Specifically, I have focused on transracial and transnational adoption, the therapeutic and psychological issues of adoptees and their families, identity issues (racial, cultural, adoptive) for adoptees, adoption microaggressions, and complex relationships (e.g., estrangement) in adoptive families.
