Profile

Seán McCarthy is a professor in the Department of Writing Studies at Montclair State University, where he leads interdisciplinary initiatives bridging the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Mathematics. His scholarship and teaching focus on the intersections of Writing Studies, community engagement, and innovation, with particular emphasis on transdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning.

Before joining Montclair State, Seán served as a founding member and associate director of JMU X-Labs, an internationally recognized innovation lab at James Madison University. His work has involved partnerships with nonprofits, government agencies, think tanks, and universities across the U.S. and internationally.

Seán’s academic and engaged scholarship has appeared in books, journals, digital platforms, and exhibitions, often in collaboration with scholars and community members. He is co-director of Celebrating Simms and Mapping the Black Digital and Public Humanities, nationally recognized digital humanities projects that explore Black history and culture. Currently, Seán is co-authoring a book on experiential learning in U.S. higher education, under contract with Routledge. His teaching portfolio includes courses in technical writing, digital rhetoric, nonprofit communication, and interdisciplinary innovation, and he has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, engagement, and design-focused pedagogy.
