In her role as Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life, Dr. Dawn Soufleris (or “Dr. S” to students) leads the Division of Student Development and Campus Life (SDCL) at Montclair State University. SDCL is dedicated to fostering student success by providing access, support, and meaningful engagement opportunities that promote academic excellence and a strong sense of belonging within Montclair’s diverse community.

The division encompasses a wide range of student-centered departments and services, including the Dean of Students Office, CARE Team, Residence Life, Campus Activities (clubs, organizations, and Greek Life), Commuter Engagement, the Office of Student Belonging, Athletics and Recreation, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Student Health Center, Health Promotion, the Student Center, Student Communications and Red Hawk Life, Student Conduct, the Disability Resource Center, Veteran Services, and the University Police Department and Emergency Management Services.

Dr. Soufleris is supported by a senior leadership team that includes the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, Associate Vice President for Operations and Strategic Initiatives, Associate Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, and the Associate Vice President and Chief of Police. Together, they serve as strong advocates for Montclair students and work collaboratively to enhance the student experience across both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses. In addition to her administrative role, Dr. Soufleris serves as an adjunct faculty member in Montclair’s Higher Education master’s program.

As a first-generation college student, Dr. Soufleris brings a deeply personal commitment to ensuring that all students feel supported, connected, and empowered throughout their college journey. She understands firsthand the critical role that belonging, engagement, and access to resources play in student success. SDCL’s programs and services are intentionally designed to support students’ academic, personal, and social development.

Dr. Soufleris holds a PhD in Sociology from the University at Buffalo, a Master of Arts in Teaching (Social Sciences) and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Binghamton University, and a graduate certificate in Higher Education Legal Compliance from the Thomas R. Kline School of Law at Drexel University. She has dedicated more than 35 years to the field of higher education. Her areas of expertise include student development theory, generational trends, Title IX, crisis management, the transition to college, and the impact of student engagement on retention.
