Dr. Carnevale is a historian of the twentieth century U.S. specializing in immigration. Among the courses she teaches are: U.S. Immigration History; U.S. Women's History; Italian America Past and Present; and America in the 1960s. Her research on Italian American history has been supported by fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Institute Sponsored by The Lower East Side Tenement Museum/UNITE!, and the Social Science Research Council/International Migration Program Fellowship Funded by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Her work appears in edited collections and in publications such as the Journal of Urban Studies, the Journal of Social History, and the Journal of American Ethnic History. Her book, A New Language, A New World: Italian Immigrants in the United States, 1890-1945 (University of Illinois Press, 2009) received a 2010 American Book Award. She is co-editor of the Critical Studies in Italian Migrations book series of Fordham University Press (formerly Critical Studies in Italian America) and has served as a consultant on a variety of public history projects.
