STEVE MCCARTHY is an Emmy Award winning Filmmaker, network TV news Producer, Director and Director of Photography. A former staff producer for "60 Minutes" and "Dateline," he formed McCarthy Productions, Inc in 2001 and produced projects for "60 Minutes," "Dateline," "Charlie Rose," MSNBC, PBS, BBC America, Reuters and others. In 2006 he directed an independent film "Finding Paddy.” In 2016 he co-produced the documentary “The One That Got Away” which aired nationally on PBS. In 2019 he Co-Directed and Co-Produced the HBO documentary “Breslin & Hamill: Deadline Artists about the journalism greats Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill. (2020 National Emmy Winner) On the eve of the 2020 presidential election, McCarthy produced and filmed stories about the vote in Pennsylvania for a special report of PBS’s Washington Week, featuring Washington Post Reporter Robert Costa. In 2022 he directed "Eva's Promise", about Eva Schloss, posthumous step sister of Anne Frank, remembering her brother Heinz and fulfilling a promise she made to him on the train to Auschwitz. McCarthy teaches journalism and documentary production at MSU’s School of Communication and Media. He and colleagues Mark Effron and Vernard Gantt developed the student weekly news program "Montclair News Labs" which airs on Channel 34. Recent student projects include reports on Hurricane Maria recovery in Puerto Rico, sustainability projects in Malawi, the refugee crisis in Greece, post-revolution life in Tunisia, and documenting the work of Swedish NGO Spiritus Mundi in Amman, Jordan as they bring music, dance, and theater into the lives of a group of orphans, refugee, and handicapped youth. The film “Hayatuna” recently premiered in the Montclair Film Festival. In 2018 McCarthy helped lead a student journalism team to report on the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The special edition of Montclair News Lab on Hurricane Maria won a College Television Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. It also won a Student RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award. In 2022 McCarthy and Dr. David Sanders led a team of student journalists and filmmakers to New Orleans to report on Racial Justice and Climate Change. This report also won a College Television Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
