SPRING 2020 OFFICE HOURS: Monday 10:30-11:30, Wednesday 10:30-11:30, 4:30-5:30, and by appointment (walk-ins are accommodated as much as possible but it's best to arrange a time beforehand).

TEACHING: I teach the history of the ancient Mediterranean and surrounding areas as well as Greek, Latin, and classical archaeology. During the past three years I have given courses in Roman Civilization (the basic MSU Roman history survey), more advanced ancient history courses such as "Greece, Rome, and the Hellenistic World," "The Roman Republic." and "The Roman Empire"; in Roman Law; in elementary Latin and Greek; in methods of teaching Latin; and in Roman history and archaeological field methods during Montclair State's summer field school at the "Villa of the Antonines" in Genzano di Roma, Italy (ancient Lanuvium).

COURSES FOR 2017-2018: Roman Civilization (the basic history survey; fall and spring), Introduction to Roman Law (fall); Beginning Greek I (fall) and Beginning Greek II (spring).

COURSES for Fall 2018: Roman Civilization; The Roman Empire.

RESEARCH: My research centers broadly around the history and archaeology of Roman imperial villas and their relationship to wider Roman society; around ancient historiography; and around the evidence of Greek and Latin papyri for ancient history and culture. My current research concerns the history and archaeology of the "Villa degli Antonini" site in the region of Latium (cf. below), the evidence for imperial slaves and freedmen in ancient documents, and a late Hellenistic historical papyrus treating native rebellions in Egypt. I am one of the editors of the Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists, an international peer-reviewed journal which publishes articles on all aspects of Greco-Roman, Coptic, and early Arab Egypt, as well as on ancient documents more generally.

ADMINISTRATION, FIELDWORK: I direct MSU's Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies (http://www.montclair.edu/chss/center-heritage-archaeological-studies) and am co-director of the Center's "Villa degli Antonini" Project, which since 2010 has been excavating part of a large, Antonine-era villa complex in Genzano di Roma (ancient Lanuvium), Italy. I am also the academic coordinator for the interdepartmental Minor in Archaeology and an advisor for the Latin/Teacher Education program. I have served as Director and Co-Director of the University's Institute for the Humanities and as the Chair of the Department of Classics and General Humanities.
