Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence. It uses the methods of psychology, computer science, linguistics, communication sciences and philosophy to examine how the mind carries out intelligent behaviors.
The minor in Cognitive Science can be the pathway to a better understanding of how your mind works. It allows you to achieve an interdisciplinary perspective on questions such as:
- What is consciousness?
- How did intelligence originate?
- How are languages stored in the brain?
- Can a computer that carries out a conversation with a human think and feel?
In the program, you will examine how the mind carries out intelligent behaviors such as:
- Understanding
- Speaking
- Planning
- Creating
- Reasoning
- Problem solving
The 18-credit, interdisciplinary minor is open to students of any major and is excellent preparation for graduate programs in psychology, linguistics, philosophy, communication sciences, and, of course, cognitive science.
A degree in cognitive science can also lead to career opportunities in a wide range of areas such as telecommunications, medical analysis, human factors engineering, artificial intelligence, multimedia design, education, and technical writing. The Philosophy department aims to stimulate intellectual curiosity by engaging students in core philosophical questions through our courses and ambitious co-curricular programming. By training students in textual interpretation, conceptual analysis, and logical reasoning, we empower them to understand and assess the answers given by philosophers, as well as to examine their own beliefs and values.
